Andoni Iraola commits to Bournemouth amid Man Utd and Tottenham links
Iraola: 'I'm very happy at Bournemouth'

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has moved swiftly to quash mounting speculation surrounding his future, directly addressing rumours of potential moves to Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur. The highly-rated Spanish manager has reaffirmed his commitment to the Cherries, stating he remains 'very happy' at the Vitality Stadium.

Iraola addresses the speculation head-on

Speaking to Spanish publication Marca, Andoni Iraola was asked about the growing chatter linking him with the managerial hot seats at two of the Premier League's traditional giants. The 43-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the current season, provided a clear and reassuring message for Bournemouth supporters. 'I'm very happy at Bournemouth, I've always said that,' Iraola stated emphatically.

He elaborated on his philosophical view of managerial contracts, suggesting that mutual trust is more important than a signed document. 'For managers, the contract isn't that important. I believe that trust should be renewed every year. If you're happy with me and I'm happy with you, why not continue for another year?'

Iraola, who took charge in June 2023 following Gary O'Neil's departure, has enhanced his reputation significantly on the south coast. Last season, he guided the club to a record-breaking ninth-place finish in the Premier League, achieving their highest-ever points total. However, the current campaign has presented greater challenges following the summer sales of key defenders Illia Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen, and Milos Kerkez, and the recent £62.5 million departure of star forward Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City.

The Athletic Bilbao connection and Basque success

Beyond the Premier League interest, Iraola has also been touted as a potential long-term successor to Ernesto Valverde at his former club, Athletic Bilbao. As a player, Iraola is a legend at the Basque club, making the sixth-highest number of appearances in their history. When questioned about this possibility, he expressed his admiration for Valverde. 'At Athletic Bilbao, they probably have the manager I admire the most in Ernesto Valverde. I hope he stays for many years. That's what I feel as a fan.'

Iraola is part of a notable contingent of Basque managers thriving in England's top flight, alongside Arsenal's Mikel Arteta and Aston Villa's Unai Emery. Asked about this trend, he credited the high standard of coaching in La Liga and the ability to adapt. 'The Premier League is a very global league, and there are fewer and fewer English managers. The competition is brutal, but I'm excited when I face Mikel or other people I know.'

Focus remains on Bournemouth's future

Despite the external noise, Iraola's immediate focus appears firmly fixed on Bournemouth. He dismissed the idea of staying somewhere solely due to a contract, framing the future as a collaborative decision. 'I wouldn't want to stay somewhere simply because I have a signed contract. Once we achieve our goal, we'll meet and see how to approach the next season and whether or not to stay.'

He concluded with a positive assessment of his current situation, offering hope to the Cherries faithful. 'That's what I'm thinking about, but continuing here is a good option.' This public commitment will be a significant boost for the club as they navigate the second half of the season, with their highly-regarded manager seemingly intent on building on the impressive foundations he has laid.
