Liverpool Women's goalkeeper Rafaela Borggräfe has been handed a six-match suspension by the Football Association after an investigation found she made a racist comment.
The FA Investigation and Sanction
The FA concluded its inquiry into language used by Borggräfe that involved a reference to skin colour. The remark was overheard by colleagues and staff while the Liverpool squad was preparing for a team photograph earlier this season.
Borggräfe accepted the charge and the resulting sanction. In addition to the suspension, she has been ordered to complete an education programme. She has already served five matches of the six-game ban while the investigation was ongoing.
Club and Manager Respond
Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor addressed the situation, confirming the FA's decision. He stated that the club had supported the governing body's process throughout.
"We have a slight update on the situation," Taylor said. "The FA has now completed its thorough investigation. They sanctioned the player with a six-game ban. That ban has been ongoing whilst we've been playing, so effectively she will be out of the running to be included this weekend, but after that she is available for selection."
Taylor did express some frustration with the length of the process, noting it had been challenging for all involved, particularly the player. "I will say, it's been dragged on a little bit. I think that's been frustrating for everyone involved, particularly Rafa. But we're happy now that it's completed, we're happy now that we have some actual detail on what it looks like, and all of us can now move on," he added.
Moving Forward
With the FA's disciplinary process now concluded, Borggräfe will be eligible for selection after serving the final match of her suspension. The case highlights the ongoing efforts within football to address discriminatory language and behaviour.
