Liverpool Legend Steve Nicol Delivers Scathing Assessment of Mohamed Salah's Performance
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has launched a blistering critique of Mohamed Salah following the Reds' humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup. The former defender, who won five league titles with Liverpool, expressed bewilderment at Salah's dramatic drop in form this season.
Manchester City Dominance Ends Liverpool's FA Cup Dreams
Manchester City delivered a masterclass performance on Saturday, with Erling Haaland's hat-trick and Antoine Semenyo's clinical finish sending Arne Slot's Liverpool crashing out of the competition. The match marked Salah's first appearance since announcing his impending departure from Anfield at season's end, adding significant scrutiny to his performance.
The 33-year-old Egyptian forward, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 for £34 million, has endured a difficult campaign and continued his struggles against City. Salah squandered a golden opportunity early in the match and later saw a second-half penalty saved by City goalkeeper James Trafford.
Nicol Questions Salah's Dramatic Decline
"This is unprecedented," Nicol told ESPN. "How can you go from almost winning the Player of the Year last year to this? To the fact that now you don't look as though you know where the goal is."
Analyzing Salah's early miss, Nicol was particularly critical: "The fact is, he had plenty of time to get it under control and pick his spot. But his touch is so poor. Where's the power? He's obviously, his whole body shape's wrong."
The former Liverpool star also dissected Salah's penalty failure: "And even the penalty kick. He doesn't have his head up. You watch the majority of people take penalty kicks nowadays. They're all watching where the goalie is. But Mo is so concentrated and so unsure that he has to concentrate on the ball and make sure he gets a good strike. And so all that other stuff that you would normally do with your head up, because you're confident, has completely and utterly disappeared."
Van Dijk's Performance Also Under Scrutiny
Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley joined the criticism, questioning the form of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after the Dutch defender conceded the penalty that opened the floodgates for Manchester City.
"He's been poor as well," Burley said of Van Dijk. "Two guys that were paid a King's ransom in the summer, two leaders, he's the captain, two guys that have taken this Liverpool team on their shoulders in different aspects, have been two of the worst performers."
Burley continued: "Obviously, [Ibrahima] Konate has had a very, very bad season, but in terms of leadership, positioning and defending with Van Dijk's quality, he's been poor."
Slot Defends Players Amid Team Struggles
When questioned about the performances of experienced players like Salah and Van Dijk after the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot declined to single out individuals.
"I wouldn't like to point out to individuals after a loss like this or after a disappointing season that we are having. I think it's about the team," Slot stated.
The manager acknowledged Salah's opportunities: "Mo [Salah] had a few good chances, which is always important because you want players like him to get chances, and I think that's what in general we did this season, getting him or other players in good positions."
Slot addressed Liverpool's broader offensive struggles: "Unfortunately, if you look at not only today but the whole season, the amount of goals we scored is far too low for the amount of chances we created, but definitely for the Liverpool standard."
The comprehensive defeat raises serious questions about Liverpool's direction as they approach the end of a challenging season, with key players underperforming and the team struggling to meet expectations.
