Maguire Backs Young Defenders to Shape Manchester United's Future
Experienced England defender Harry Maguire has made a bold prediction about the future of Manchester United's defensive line, forecasting that young talents Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven could become the club's long-term centre-back partnership within five to six years.
High Praise for £52 Million Signing Yoro
The former Manchester United captain spoke glowingly about 20-year-old French defender Leny Yoro, who joined the Red Devils in 2024 from Lille in a £52 million transfer that saw United beat competition from Champions League giants Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. Despite breaking his foot just two weeks after arriving at Old Trafford during a pre-season game, Yoro has made an impressive 62 appearances for the club, featuring in both Ruben Amorim's back-three system and maintaining his place under current manager Michael Carrick.
'Leny Yoro has all the attributes, the talent, and the potential to have whatever career he wants,' Maguire told DHL Express. 'It's exceptional to see someone playing centre-back in the Premier League at his age, especially at a club like Manchester United. He's doing an amazing job and there is still so much more he can improve on.'
Maguire went even further in his assessment, suggesting that in ten to fifteen years, Yoro could be considered among the defensive greats. 'Hopefully, in 10 or 15 years' time, we're sitting here putting his name in that bracket of the all-time greats,' the experienced defender added.
Heaven's Rapid Rise at Old Trafford
Turning his attention to 18-year-old Ayden Heaven, who moved to Manchester United from Premier League rivals Arsenal in 2025, Maguire expressed equal optimism. Heaven has made 15 appearances for United this season, quickly establishing himself as another promising talent in the defensive ranks.
'I've been very impressed with Ayden Heaven since he broke into the team,' Maguire stated. 'In five or six years' time, I believe he and Leny Yoro could be the central defensive partnership for this club. The talent is there; now it's down to them to keep working hard and pushing. They both have amazing futures ahead of them here.'
Maguire's Resurgence and Leadership Role
The comments come during what has become one of Maguire's best seasons at Manchester United, despite earlier career uncertainty when he was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag in 2023. The 33-year-old's form has earned him a recall to Thomas Tuchel's England squad, and United are reportedly keen to extend his contract beyond this summer.
Maguire emphasized the importance of experienced players in developing younger talents, noting: 'Leadership is vital in the dressing room and around the club because you don't win anything without people who set high standards and help the younger lads feel confident on the pitch. The best teams always have a balance of great leaders and experience within the squad.'
Manchester United's Current Trajectory
United have shown significant improvement since Michael Carrick took over as caretaker manager following a period of stagnation under Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils currently sit third in the Premier League with seven games remaining, preparing to face Leeds United after the international break.
The club's investment in young defensive talent appears to be part of a broader strategy, with Maguire's endorsement highlighting the potential long-term benefits of developing Yoro and Heaven together. As United continue their push for Champions League qualification and future success, the emergence of these young defenders under the guidance of experienced players like Maguire could prove crucial to the club's ambitions.
