Manchester United Drastically Reduce Asking Price for Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United have taken decisive action in the transfer market by slashing their valuation of striker Joshua Zirkzee by a substantial £15 million. This significant price reduction comes directly in response to the player's formal request to depart Old Trafford during the upcoming summer transfer window. The Dutch forward, who arrived with considerable fanfare in 2024, has struggled to justify his £36.5 million transfer fee during his two-season tenure in Manchester.

A Promising Start That Faded Quickly

Erik ten Hag originally brought Zirkzee to Manchester United after being thoroughly impressed by the young striker's performances in Serie A with Bologna. During his final season in Italy, the 24-year-old Netherlands international demonstrated his potential by scoring double-digit goals, creating genuine excitement about his prospects in the Premier League. Unfortunately, that promise has failed to materialize in England, with Zirkzee managing just five Premier League goals across two full campaigns wearing the famous red shirt.

Persistent Transfer Speculation and Managerial Changes

Transfer rumors have surrounded Zirkzee for nearly his entire Manchester United career. Last summer, numerous reports linked him with moves away from Old Trafford, though he ultimately remained as the club instead transferred Rasmus Hojlund. The January transfer window brought renewed speculation, with the player reportedly receiving offers that failed to sufficiently impress him, leading to his decision to stay and compete for his place in the squad.

Even a managerial change at Manchester United failed to revive Zirkzee's fortunes. Since Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in the managerial hot seat, the forward has not earned a single starting appearance, watching matches primarily from the substitutes' bench. This prolonged absence from the starting lineup has convinced Zirkzee that seeking opportunities elsewhere represents the best solution for all parties involved.

Serie A Clubs Circle as Price Drops

Italian clubs have emerged as the most likely destinations for Zirkzee's potential summer move. Roma positioned themselves at the front of the queue during the January window, engaging in serious discussions with Manchester United about an initial loan arrangement that would include an obligation to purchase for approximately £35 million. Although those negotiations didn't reach completion, the Italian club maintains genuine interest in securing the striker's services.

Roma now faces fresh competition from their Serie A rivals Juventus, who have reportedly become "intrigued" by the possibility of signing Zirkzee. The player's agent, Kia Joorabchian, has actively communicated to interested clubs that a summer transfer represents a realistic possibility, with Italian publication Tuttosport reporting that the reduced asking price now stands around £20 million.

Dutch Legend Questions Original Transfer Decision

Netherlands football legend Ruud Gullit has publicly questioned Zirkzee's original decision to join Manchester United, repeatedly urging his compatriot to find a new club where he can revive his career. "I saw that Roma maybe wanted to take him and I hope that he will leave Manchester United," Gullit stated emphatically in January. "For me, there was always a doubt that it was the right decision to go there. I think he should have stayed in Serie A. He was doing well with Bologna."

Gullit expanded on his criticism by suggesting Zirkzee should have joined a stronger Italian team instead of moving to England. The Dutch icon pointed to Scott McTominay's successful career revival after leaving Manchester United as evidence that a change of scenery can dramatically improve a player's fortunes. "Look at Scott McTominay. It is unbelievable how well McTominay has done since he left Old Trafford. It's incredible, it's fantastic to watch," Gullit observed.

Manchester United recently secured a crucial 3-1 victory over top-four rivals Aston Villa and now prepare for their next Premier League challenge against Bournemouth on Friday night. Meanwhile, the club's hierarchy continues working behind the scenes to reshape their squad for future campaigns, with Zirkzee's impending departure representing just one piece of their broader transfer strategy.
