Manchester United Forwards Withdraw from International Duty
Manchester United forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have pulled out of international duty for their respective national teams, Cameroon and Slovenia. The decision comes as a precautionary measure following minor fitness issues, with both players expected to be available for the club's next Premier League fixture against Leeds United on April 13.
Details of the Withdrawals
Bryan Mbeumo, who started in Manchester United's recent 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, has withdrawn from Cameroon's upcoming friendlies against Australia and China. According to the club's official website, this move is 'as a precaution' to manage his condition. Similarly, Benjamin Sesko, who replaced Mbeumo in the 71st minute of the same match, will not participate in Slovenia's friendlies against Hungary and Montenegro. Manchester United stated that Sesko's withdrawal is 'in order to ensure that he fully recovers from an issue that United have been carefully managing throughout recent weeks.'
Neither fitness concern is considered major, and the BBC reports that Manchester United anticipates having both players ready for the Leeds match. This is particularly significant as Cameroon and Slovenia failed to qualify for the upcoming World Cup, making the friendlies less critical for their star players.
Impact on Manchester United and International Squads
With much of the Manchester United squad away on international duty, the club faces a quiet period until their next outing. Interim manager Michael Carrick commented on the situation after the Bournemouth draw, noting, 'There's not too many left, to be honest. We've got Mason [Mount], Josh [Zirkzee], we've got Tyrell [Malacia], and Luke Shaw, so most of the other lads are off.' He added that the break provides a chance for players to recover without rushing back, despite the long wait.
In contrast, Morocco's Noussair Mazraoui will join his national team for friendlies against Ecuador and Paraguay as they prepare for the World Cup, where they are grouped with Scotland, Brazil, and Haiti. Meanwhile, Manchester United may see the return of injured players like Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt by the Leeds game, a positive development given Harry Maguire's suspension due to a red card against Bournemouth. Maguire has rejoined the England squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, but will miss the Leeds match.
Other injury updates include Patrick Dorgu, who is not expected back from a hamstring issue until late April. This period of international break offers Manchester United an opportunity to regroup and focus on recovery ahead of their crucial fixtures in the coming weeks.
