Marseille Boss Criticizes Arsenal Loanee Nwaneri's Commitment Again
Marseille Boss Slams Nwaneri's Commitment Again

Marseille head coach Habib Beye has once again criticized Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri, defending his decision to leave the 19-year-old on the bench for the Ligue 1 clash against Nice. Beye stated that the forward must 'give way more in his day-to-day commitment' to earn playing time.

Nwaneri's Loan Struggles

Arsenal sent Nwaneri on loan to Marseille in January to secure regular first-team minutes after he struggled for game time in the first half of the season. The highly rated teenager, a product of Arsenal's Hale End academy, enjoyed a dream debut by scoring in a 3-1 victory over Lens. However, he has failed to build on that performance, making only two further starts in the French top flight. Six of his nine league appearances have come off the bench.

Managerial Instability

The uncertainty at Marseille has not helped Nwaneri's situation. Roberto De Zerbi left his role as manager weeks after the attacker's arrival, subsequently taking over at Tottenham. De Zerbi was replaced by former Newcastle and Senegal defender Beye, who has yet to hand Nwaneri a single start in any competition. Nwaneri was an unused substitute for the 11th consecutive game against Nice, which ended in a 1-1 draw after Elye Wahi's late penalty canceled out Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's opener.

'He's a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment,' Beye told L1+. 'Other players gave way more.'

Previous Warnings

Nwaneri received a similar warning from Beye earlier this month after a 2-1 defeat to Monaco. Beye acknowledged Nwaneri's talent but emphasized the need for adaptation to Ligue 1's intensity, particularly in counter-pressing and defensive efforts. 'He scored against Lille, but overall there are aspects that need to be stronger,' Beye said. 'He's a young player who needs to understand that coming from the Premier League to a high-level club like Marseille requires time to adapt.'

Arsenal Fan Criticism

Arsenal's decision to loan Nwaneri has drawn criticism from fans, especially after Mikel Merino suffered a potentially season-ending foot injury. Former Arsenal full-back Nigel Winterburn commented, 'When January came around, I said players shouldn't go on loan when competing in four competitions. You keep them unless a player asks to leave. You never know what will happen with the squad.'

The draw against Nice leaves Marseille sixth in Ligue 1, three points behind fifth-placed Rennes ahead of their next match against Nantes.
