Manchester United Receive Major Defensive Boost Ahead of Leeds Showdown
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has delivered encouraging news regarding defender Lisandro Martinez's fitness, indicating the Argentine center-back should be available for selection when United host bitter rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford next Monday. This update comes as a significant relief for the Red Devils, who will be without suspended defender Harry Maguire for the crucial Premier League encounter.
Martinez's Road to Recovery
Martinez has been sidelined for Manchester United's last five matches due to a persistent calf injury, with his most recent appearance dating back to February 10th during United's 1-1 draw against West Ham. The 28-year-old defender had been targeting a return during last month's match against Aston Villa, but suffered what Carrick described as a 'slight reaction' during training, forcing him to miss additional fixtures including United's 1-1 draw with Bournemouth before the international break.
The timing of Martinez's potential return couldn't be more critical, with Maguire's red card against Bournemouth resulting in a mandatory suspension that rules him out of the Leeds clash. During Martinez's absence, young defender Leny Yoro has been partnering Maguire in central defense, but United's defensive options will now require reshuffling.
Training Camp Developments
United supporters received positive signals when Martinez was included in Carrick's 25-man squad for this week's intensive training camp in the Republic of Ireland. The camp has also seen the return of Patrick Dorgu, who has been recovering from his own extended injury layoff, with both players now potentially available for selection against Leeds.
'The break has actually worked in our favour in some ways in terms of getting players back,' Carrick revealed in an interview with United's in-house media. 'Mason [Mount] is back in and around it and has been training. He's had that period of time to build it up. To have Licha [Martinez] back in and around us this week is good.'
The United manager emphasized the importance of defensive depth, particularly with Maguire's suspension: 'Obviously Harry [Maguire] is going to miss the [Leeds] game so to have Licha back in and around it, with Leny [Yoro] and Ayden [Heaven], we just want to keep getting stronger as a group really. That's part of what we're trying to do this week.'
International Break Benefits
Carrick expressed satisfaction that all United players returned from international duty without injuries, describing the squad as being in 'good spirits' as they prepare for the critical final stretch of the Premier League season. The manager highlighted how the extended break has provided valuable recovery time while maintaining match fitness.
'The 24-day gap seems like a long time but factoring in the internationals, it's worked out alright to be honest,' Carrick explained. 'Players are still playing, training, going away and getting a bit of a fresh environment as well, not having to rush back from internationals. It's given the boys an extra few days to spend time with their families.'
The United head coach believes the scheduling has worked to the team's advantage: 'It doesn't feel as long and we've ended up with a good week of prep going into Leeds on Monday night which is pretty normal, so I think we've made the best of it.'
Momentum Building for Champions League Push
Despite dropping points in their previous match, Carrick remains confident about United's position in the Premier League table with seven games remaining. The team continues to chase Champions League qualification, and the manager believes they have built significant momentum, particularly at Old Trafford.
'We've certainly built momentum. It's a challenging league and you can see that, whoever you're playing, there's not many easy games, if any, in this league,' Carrick stated. 'We understand that it's not always going to come easy and there might be a few little blips and ups and downs. But we've managed to create that momentum and especially at home, we've played ever so well and had some big results.'
The United manager emphasized the importance of the upcoming fixture: 'We're certainly looking forward to getting back to Old Trafford. It's such a big, important game for us.' With Martinez potentially returning to bolster the defense and the squad refreshed from the international break, United appear well-positioned for their crucial encounter against Leeds as they continue their push for European football next season.
