Per Mertesacker a 'Hot Candidate' for DFB Role After Arsenal Exit Plan
Mertesacker in Frame for Germany Job After Arsenal Exit

Former Arsenal defender and current academy manager Per Mertesacker has emerged as a prime target for a significant role within the German Football Association (DFB), following his announcement that he will leave the Gunners at the end of the season.

Arsenal Departure and New Ambitions

The 41-year-old World Cup winner confirmed he will step down from his position as Head of Arsenal's academy upon the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign. Mertesacker, who took the role immediately after retiring from playing in 2018, stated a desire to seek a new challenge that will 'push myself even further'.

In a statement on Arsenal's official website, the man affectionately known as 'BFG' said: 'Arsenal is and will always be a very special club to me, so this was a difficult decision. I remain focused on finishing the season strongly, continuing to nurture and develop our young talent.' CEO Richard Garlick expressed the club's full support for his decision, praising his inspirational leadership.

German FA Interest Heats Up

According to prominent German publication Bild, Mertesacker is now considered a 'hot candidate' for a managing director position with the DFB. This interest follows swiftly after news of his planned Arsenal exit became public.

The report indicates that the specific role could be that of Managing Director of Sport, a position currently held by Andreas Rettig. Rettig's contract is set to run until 31 December 2026, and his future remains uncertain. Notably, this role oversees not only Germany's national teams but also the DFB's youth academy setup, an area where Mertesacker has built extensive expertise in North London.

A Potential Succession Plan

This is not the first time Mertesacker has been linked with a return to German football administration. Following Oliver Bierhoff's exit after the 2022 World Cup, both Mertesacker and Sami Khedira were viewed as potential successors. While a deal wasn't reached then, sporting director Rudi Voller – whose contract now runs to 2028 – has repeatedly suggested Mertesacker as a future candidate.

Although Mertesacker has indicated plans to take an extended break of at least a year after leaving Arsenal, Bild suggests that an approach from the DFB could alter those plans. In the immediate future, however, the former centre-back intends to remain in London with his family.

Arsenal have confirmed they will now focus on a succession plan, emphasising their continued commitment to major trophy success through sustained academy investment.
