Dolphins Sack Mike McDaniel After Playoff Drought Continues
Miami Dolphins fire head coach Mike McDaniel

The Miami Dolphins have parted ways with head coach Mike McDaniel, bringing an end to his three-year tenure after the team failed to reach the NFL postseason for a second straight year.

Owner Cites Need for 'Comprehensive Change'

In a statement released on Thursday, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross confirmed the decision, stating it followed careful evaluation and discussions at the conclusion of the season. "I have made the decision that our organization is in need of comprehensive change," Ross said.

He expressed personal admiration for McDaniel, calling him "an incredibly creative football mind" and thanking him for his hard work and commitment. However, the team's persistent failure to advance in the playoffs ultimately forced Ross's hand.

A Promising Start Stalls

McDaniel, 42, was hired in 2022 at the age of 38, seen as a bright offensive mind from his time as coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers. He initially revitalised the Dolphins' attack, with the team ranking sixth in total offense in his first season and first in the following campaign.

Despite this, his overall record stood at 35 wins and 33 losses. While he guided Miami to the playoffs in his first two seasons, the team lost in the first round on both occasions. The 2024 season ended without a playoff berth, sealed by a Week 15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This ensures the Dolphins' 25-year streak without a playoff victory – the longest active drought in the NFL – will continue into next season.

Turmoil on and off the Field

The decision to fire McDaniel comes amid broader organisational upheaval. The Dolphins dismissed long-time general manager Chris Grier at the end of October and had begun a search for his replacement this week.

On-field struggles were compounded by controversy surrounding quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The former first-round pick was benched during a disjointed end to the season and subsequently stated he would be "good with" playing for a new team in 2025.

McDaniel's departure marks a swift fall for a coach once hailed as part of a new generation of NFL leaders. The franchise now faces a critical offseason, tasked with finding new leadership to finally end its long-standing postseason misery.
