Millwall have emerged as the surprise frontrunners to secure a loan deal for Sunderland's highly-rated goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, in a move that would represent a major coup for the Championship club.
Championship Rivals Watch as Loan Deal Becomes Possible
The Lions are actively pursuing the 25-year-old shot-stopper after a significant twist in the transfer saga. Patterson, a key figure in Sunderland's promotion campaign last season, has found himself as backup this term following the summer arrival of Robin Roefs.
His lack of game time had previously alerted Queens Park Rangers, Leicester City, and Southampton, all of whom were in the market for a goalkeeper. However, a move seemed unlikely after reports suggested Sunderland would only sanction a permanent exit, with Football Insider claiming the club could value Patterson at a staggering £30 million in the summer.
Neil's Reunion and Benda Recall Open the Door
In a fresh update, transfer specialist Alan Nixon has indicated that a loan move could now be back on the cards. This development has put Millwall in pole position, with several factors working in their favour.
Firstly, the Championship side have a vacancy after Fulham recalled goalkeeper Steven Benda. Secondly, and perhaps crucially, Millwall's head coach Alex Neil knows Patterson intimately, having played a pivotal role in the goalkeeper's early career during his own tenure at the Stadium of Light.
Neil is now keen to be reunited with Patterson at The Den, where the player's experience of winning promotion via the play-offs with Sunderland could prove invaluable. Millwall narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season and have their sights firmly set on a top-six finish this year.
Le Bris on Patterson's 'Different' Situation
At Sunderland, manager Regis Le Bris has been open about Patterson's changed role. Speaking in October 2025, Le Bris acknowledged the unique challenge for a number two goalkeeper.
"The goalkeeper's position is a bit different to anywhere else on the pitch," Le Bris said. "You really need an injury to be able to come back into the game if you are not starting... For Anthony, I think the reality at the minute is really clear for him."
He added that Patterson, who played extensively in the previous two seasons, "remains really positive" and has time to develop, noting that "the goalkeeper's life is a bit longer than most other players."
If the loan move is finalised, Patterson would be expected to challenge Max Crocombe for the starting jersey at Millwall, with Lukas Jensen currently sidelined by injury. The potential signing would be a significant statement of intent from the London club as they aim to strengthen their squad for a promotion push.
