Millwall Secures 999-Year Lease for The Den, Paving Way for Stadium Development
Millwall's 999-Year Lease Deal Advances Stadium Development Plans

Millwall Football Club's stadium development ambitions have taken a monumental leap forward with the official signing of a 999-year lease for The Den, approved by government officials on Friday, March 20, 2026. This landmark agreement provides the Championship club with unprecedented long-term security to pursue extensive redevelopment plans in South Bermondsey.

Historic Lease Secures Millwall's Future

The south London club originally reached a deal with Lewisham Council in 2024, with the understanding that any substantial development in the area depended on Millwall's permanent presence at The Den. While specific stadium plans remain in the conceptual stage, this near-millennium-long lease grants the club the stability needed to explore significant land development opportunities around their historic ground.

A Decade in the Making

This breakthrough comes exactly ten years after Lewisham Council had considered using compulsory purchase orders to acquire land adjacent to the stadium. The current agreement represents a complete reversal of that approach, demonstrating a collaborative partnership between the club and local government.

Club chairman James Berylson emphasized the significance of this moment, stating: "This is a defining moment for Millwall Football Club and Millwall Community Trust. Securing a 999-year lease at The Den gives us the stability and certainty every club needs to build for the long term."

Berylson continued: "So much hard work, time and dedication has gone into reaching this moment after announcing the agreement in principle back in May 2024. I would like to thank Mayor Brenda Dacres OBE, and all at Lewisham Council, for their positive and collaborative approach. Together, we have secured an outcome that safeguards our home while supporting the wider interests of the borough."

Ambitious Expansion Plans

AFL Architects currently have an ongoing project for Millwall FC that envisions expanding The Den's capacity from its current 20,000 seats to approximately 34,000. The comprehensive development plan includes:

  • Construction of new residential and commercial properties surrounding the stadium
  • A complete stadium renovation that maintains the ground's distinctive character
  • Architectural elements inspired by the iconic railway arches famous throughout south London

Preserving The Den's Unique Atmosphere

Millwall managing director Mark Fairbrother stressed the importance of maintaining what makes The Den special during any redevelopment. He told the Guardian: "The key thing is we can never lose what makes this place special. We want everyone close to the pitch. We want the opposition to be fearful of coming here."

Fairbrother added: "What we don't want to be is just another faceless stadium. You need to be at the Den. This place is unique and that's what we should be proud of."

The 999-year lease represents more than just a property agreement—it symbolizes a commitment to Millwall's future in Lewisham and provides the foundation for transformative development that could reshape South Bermondsey while preserving the club's distinctive identity and intimidating home atmosphere.
