Manuel Neuer Reveals Why He Snubbed Arsenal Move as a Youngster
Neuer: Why I turned down Arsenal transfer as a youngster

Bayern Munich and Germany icon Manuel Neuer has disclosed that he once turned down the chance to join Arsenal, opting instead to stay in his homeland to forge his legendary career.

The Early Interest from North London

In a revealing interview, the veteran goalkeeper confirmed that Arsenal, under then-manager Arsene Wenger, showed significant interest in signing him after his performances at Under-19 level. "After the Under-19s, FC Koln were very interested in me – and so were Arsenal," Neuer stated. He noted that Wenger, a polyglot, was a factor, but ultimately it was not enough to sway his decision.

Neuer explained his reasoning was rooted in pragmatism for a young player in his position. "I didn’t want to go abroad because I knew how difficult it is as a young goalkeeper," he said. This critical choice allowed him to continue his development at his boyhood club, Schalke 04, where he made his first-team breakthrough in the 2006/07 season following an injury to then-number one Frank Rost.

From Schalke to Bayern and Global Stardom

Seizing his opportunity, Neuer established himself as Schalke's undisputed first choice for the next four seasons. His exceptional form attracted the attention of German giants Bayern Munich, who secured his signature in 2011 for a fee of around €18 million (£15.7m).

The move, initially met with some fan hostility, proved to be a masterstroke. At Bayern, Neuer redefined the goalkeeping role and cemented his legacy as one of the greatest ever. His trophy haul is staggering, comprising 34 major honours for club and country, including the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Germany and two UEFA Champions League titles.

Future Plans and Possible Extension

Now 39, Neuer retired from international football after Euro 2024 but shows no signs of slowing down at club level. He signed a contract extension with Bayern Munich in February 2025, tying him to the club until June 2026.

In a recent discussion, the goalkeeper hinted he could play beyond his 40th birthday, but stressed that several conditions must be met. "I can’t really answer that at the moment because I don’t really know that myself," Neuer said regarding another potential renewal. "My body has to be at a certain level that I am happy with and where I can deliver performances. Of course, the club plays a role in this decision too."

For now, his focus remains on the present. "I live in the here and now," he added, aiming to finish the season positively with Bayern Munich as they chase more silverware.
