Manchester United legend Gary Neville has laid out his clear vision for the club's future, naming three elite managers he believes should be in the frame to take the permanent job at Old Trafford.
Carrick's Interim Role Ruled Out
The discussion comes after former midfielder Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager until the end of the season, replacing caretaker Darren Fletcher. Carrick takes over with the club seventh in the Premier League, just three points off the top four, and his primary task is to secure Champions League qualification.
However, Neville, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, was adamant that Carrick should not be considered for the role beyond this season, regardless of his success. "I hope Michael does really well," Neville said. "But there cannot be any consideration that Michael takes the job beyond the end of this season, for the sake of Michael and the club, even if he wins every single game."
Neville's Three Standout Candidates
Having dismissed the interim option, Neville pinpointed three current international managers as the standout contenders to succeed at United. He emphasised the need for a boss who can handle the intense media scrutiny, manage the dressing room, deal with the club's owners, and play an attractive style of football with proven Champions League and big-game experience.
"The three that stand out are [Thomas] Tuchel, [Carlo] Ancelotti and [Mauricio] Pochettino," Neville stated. "They could all be available after the World Cup." He also mentioned Eddie Howe as another credible candidate, citing his trophy win and top-four finish with Newcastle.
Ancelotti Emerges as Top Pick
Neville had previously elaborated on his choices in an interview with The Overlap, singling out Carlo Ancelotti as his favourite. He revealed the Italian was nearly appointed back in 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but a move to Real Madrid was already agreed.
"The outstanding candidate for me would be Carlo Ancelotti," Neville explained, acknowledging a potential delay if Brazil reach the World Cup final. "No-one comes as close to fulfilling everything laid out above than he does." He argued that a manager of Ancelotti or Tuchel's stature is crucial to make the club attractive to top players again.
Carrick's first match in temporary charge is the Premier League clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
