O'Reilly: City's Mr. Versatile Ready for Cup Final Glory

From Midfield to Multi-Positional Star: Nico O'Reilly's Remarkable Rise

Nico O'Reilly's career trajectory at Manchester City has been nothing short of extraordinary. The 6ft 4in utility player, who scored two crucial goals from his new central midfield role in City's victory against Newcastle last month, has become an indispensable asset for Pep Guardiola's title-chasing squad. As City prepares for Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley, O'Reilly's versatility stands as a testament to his adaptability and commitment to the team's success.

An Unexpected Transformation

O'Reilly's journey to becoming City's Mr. Versatile began unexpectedly during a training session at the City Football Academy in January 2025. "He said: 'Right, you're playing at left-back tomorrow,'" O'Reilly recalls of Guardiola's surprising instruction before an FA Cup third-round tie against Salford. Having never played in that position before, this marked only his fourth first-team appearance. Yet, just over a year later, he has not only mastered the left-back role but has also earned two England caps in that position.

"I did well, gradually, and started playing there more," O'Reilly says of his defensive transition. "I was happy with it. I didn't mind it, enjoyed it – it was a good challenge. Then this season I started to go back into midfield a bit."

Statistical Excellence Across Positions

The numbers tell a compelling story of O'Reilly's impact. During his breakthrough season, he made 13 competitive starts, finishing with five goals and two assists. His defensive contributions were equally impressive, with 30 tackles and 600 successful passes at an 87.3% success rate. Approximately 70% of his minutes came at left-back, but he also demonstrated his versatility in central midfield, defensive midfield, and even center-back positions.

This season, O'Reilly's importance has grown exponentially. With 36 starts across multiple competitions, his playing time distribution reveals Guardiola's trust: 74% at left-back, 2% in central midfield, 11% in defensive midfield, and 13% in a left-wing berth. His passing accuracy has improved to 89.2%, complemented by 87 tackles, 26 chances created, five assists, and six goals.

Wembley Dreams and Manchester Roots

O'Reilly's England debut came in November's 2-0 World Cup qualifier victory against Serbia at Wembley, where he played the entire match at left-back. Now selected in Thomas Tuchel's latest squad, he eagerly anticipates returning to the national stadium for Sunday's final. "I'm really looking forward to it," O'Reilly says. "Wembley is a special place. I've played there a few times – in the Community Shield we won [two years ago], the FA Cup we didn't. So it'd be nice to hopefully win."

The Collyhurst native's connection to Manchester runs deep. With a tattoo of "0161" – his hometown's landline dialing code – O'Reilly proudly represents his roots. "That's where I grew up – Manchester. It's me, how I became who I am today," he explains. His family, predominantly City supporters, provides unwavering support. "My family are all City fans, apart from one or two who are United, but they're all supporting me. They know not to have any banter or I'll get mad at them."

Preparing for Arsenal's Challenge

As City faces Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final, O'Reilly acknowledges the tactical challenges ahead. "They're very good at set pieces, aggressive. They use them very well. We need to prepare for it," he says, referencing City's 1-1 draw at Arsenal in September. With City currently nine points behind Arsenal in the Premier League (with a game in hand), Sunday's final carries significant implications. "The final potentially could have an impact on the title," O'Reilly notes. "We're just going there to win. That's the aim of it and we'll see what happens after that."

O'Reilly's philosophy remains simple yet powerful: "As long as I'm playing, I'm happy." This attitude, combined with his physical attributes and technical skills, makes him the ideal player for Guardiola's system. Having signed a new five-year contract in September, O'Reilly's future at City looks bright as he continues to redefine what it means to be a versatile modern footballer.
