Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has suggested that Mauricio Pochettino could make a sensational move for Chelsea star Cole Palmer if he is appointed as the new permanent manager at Old Trafford.
Man Utd's Managerial Search Heats Up
The hunt for a long-term successor to Ruben Amorim is underway at Manchester United. Amorim's 14-month reign concluded recently, with Darren Fletcher initially taking temporary charge. Fletcher oversaw a 2-2 Premier League draw with Burnley and an FA Cup defeat to Brighton before Michael Carrick was installed as caretaker until the season's end.
Carrick's interim spell began spectacularly with a 2-0 victory over rivals Manchester City. While a strong run could make him a candidate, he is not currently considered a frontrunner for the permanent role.
Instead, the leading names linked with the position are Crystal Palace's departing boss Oliver Glasner, England manager Thomas Tuchel, and USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino, who has led the US national team since September 2024, will see his contract expire after this summer's World Cup, leaving a potential opening for a club return.
Palmer Tipped as a Key Target
Meulensteen, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes a Pochettino appointment could have significant transfer ramifications. He speculates that the Argentine might look to reunite with Cole Palmer, whom he managed during his time at Chelsea.
"Could Mauricio Pochettino convince Cole Palmer to come to Manchester United? Only if Chelsea would be willing to let him go," Meulensteen told Casinostugan. "Palmer is a fantastic player and I think he would suit Manchester United really well... he is a difference maker."
Meulensteen also expressed surprise that United did not move for Palmer earlier, given the player's childhood support for the club. "It's actually too strange for words that United never picked up on it and made sure that they sounded him out," he added.
Neville Backs Pochettino Appointment
The prospect of Pochettino taking over has received backing from United legend Gary Neville. On the Stick to Football podcast, Neville outlined the credentials needed for the job and named Pochettino as one of three ideal candidates.
"The three that stand out are [Thomas] Tuchel, [Carlo] Ancelotti and [Mauricio] Pochettino," Neville stated. "They could all be available after the World Cup."
He emphasised that, despite Carrick's promising start, the club should look for an experienced manager with a proven track record in handling big clubs, the media, and Champions League football.
Following their derby triumph, Manchester United's next challenge is a tough away fixture against Premier League leaders Arsenal.
