Arsenal Women have secured the long-term future of their highly successful head coach, Renée Slegers, with the Dutchwoman signing a new three-year contract that will keep her at the North London club until the summer of 2029.
A Proven Leader Rewarded
The announcement comes with Arsenal sitting third in the Barclays Women's Super League table, eight points behind leaders Manchester City at the season's halfway point. Slegers, whose initial 18-month deal was due to expire this summer, has overseen a period of significant success since taking charge.
Her most notable achievement was guiding the Gunners to a historic UEFA Women's Champions League victory last season, while also finishing as runners-up in the domestic league behind Chelsea. The 36-year-old initially stepped in as interim boss in October 2024 following Jonas Eidevall's resignation and was handed the role permanently after orchestrating an impressive 11-match unbeaten run.
"Immensely Proud" of the Journey
Expressing her delight, Slegers highlighted her deep personal connection to the club. "I'm delighted to have signed a new contract here, as I believe we have so much to achieve together – this season and in the years to come," she stated.
She reflected on a journey that began long before her coaching tenure: "From playing in the academy and being in the stands watching Arsenal win the Champions League in 2007, to living it with our players, staff and supporters last summer, I'm immensely proud to have shared this journey with Arsenal." Under her leadership, the team remains undefeated at home in the WSL, a formidable record she will aim to extend.
Club Backing and a Key Backroom Appointment
The club's hierarchy were unequivocal in their support. Clare Wheatley, Arsenal's director of women's football, praised Slegers as "an elite coach with the capabilities to lead us as we continue to challenge to win major trophies."
Chief executive Richard Garlick added that beyond her achievements, Slegers has "embraced the values and ambitions of Arsenal, driving standards and progress."
In a related backroom move, Arsenal also confirmed the appointment of former England striker Jodie Taylor as the club's new women's technical director. Taylor, who won the Golden Boot at Euro 2017, steps up from her previous role as technical services manager, bringing a wealth of experience to the position.
