Roberto De Zerbi Takes Over as Tottenham's Third Head Coach This Season
Tottenham Hotspur have officially appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their permanent head coach, marking the third managerial change for the club this season. This decision comes just two days after the departure of interim manager Igor Tudor, who left following a dismal run of results.
De Zerbi's Background and Immediate Challenge
The Italian manager, aged 46, previously led Premier League side Brighton for nearly two years until his exit in the summer of 2024. He has now signed a five-year contract with Spurs, a deal that notably does not include a relegation release clause. De Zerbi's primary objective is to secure Tottenham's place in the Premier League, the world's wealthiest football league, with the club currently sitting just one point above the relegation zone and only seven games remaining in the season.
In a statement, De Zerbi expressed his commitment to the club's long-term vision, saying, "In all my discussions with the club's leadership, their ambition for the future has been clear - to build a team capable of reaching great achievements, and to do that playing a style of football that excites and inspires our supporters." He emphasized that his immediate focus is on improving the team's league position, with his first match in charge scheduled against Sunderland on April 12.
Fan Protests and Controversial Associations
However, De Zerbi's appointment has sparked significant controversy among the Tottenham fanbase. Three supporter groups—Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane, and Spurs Reach—publicly urged the board not to hire him due to his past association with Mason Greenwood during their time together at Marseille. The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust also issued a statement on Tuesday, declaring that they cannot support the hiring, citing "serious and far-reaching concerns" raised by many fans.
Greenwood, a former Manchester United forward, faced charges in 2022 including attempted rape and assault, which were dropped in 2023 due to witness withdrawals and new evidence. De Zerbi previously described Greenwood as a "good guy" who had paid a "heavy price," comments that have fueled the backlash from supporters.
Recent Managerial Turmoil at Spurs
This appointment follows a period of instability for Tottenham. The club sacked Thomas Frank in February, and his replacement, Igor Tudor, was dismissed after just 44 days in charge, during which the team suffered five defeats in seven matches. Tottenham's last league victory dates back to December, a stretch of 13 games without a win, highlighting the urgent need for a turnaround under De Zerbi's leadership.
As the season reaches its climax, all eyes will be on De Zerbi to see if he can steer Spurs away from relegation and begin rebuilding the team amidst ongoing fan dissent.
