Alan Shearer Condemns Chelsea's Transfer Approach as 'Baffling'
Premier League icon Alan Shearer has launched a scathing critique of Chelsea's transfer strategy, labeling recent decisions as "baffling" in light of the club's extravagant spending under owner Todd Boehly. Since BlueCo acquired Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022, the club has invested over £1 billion in new signings, including a £300 million spree last summer that brought players like Joao Pedro, Alejandro Garnacho, and Jamie Gittens to Stamford Bridge.
Persistent Weaknesses Despite Massive Investment
Despite this financial outlay, Chelsea has struggled under manager Liam Rosenior, slipping to sixth in the Premier League and exiting the Champions League. Shearer points to glaring deficiencies in key positions, particularly goalkeeper and center-back, as areas that remain unaddressed. Rosenior has alternated between Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen in goal, with neither establishing themselves as a long-term solution, while the defense has been criticized for being too easily penetrated.
Shearer emphasized on Premier League Productions: "Chelsea are still searching for a top-class goalkeeper and a top-class centre-half. It's baffling, really, when you spend that amount of money, that you still haven't got that. They're being punished for it—the keeper makes mistakes, and the centre-halves are too easy to play through."
Questionable Sales Add to Transfer Woes
Chelsea's transfer missteps extend beyond acquisitions to include sales that have raised eyebrows. Former players like Lewis Hall and Marc Guehi have departed in recent years, and ex-Premier League striker Chris Sutton has questioned the sale of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Chelsea signed Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City for £30 million in 2024, but after just 13 league appearances, he was sold to Everton for £28 million last summer. The 27-year-old has since excelled at Everton, scoring six goals and providing three assists in the Premier League under David Moyes.
Sutton remarked on the BBC's Monday Night Club: "Look at Dewsbury-Hall at Everton—I wonder what Chelsea fans make of that. I know Cole Palmer is there, but I wonder what they're thinking when they see his form and his ability in the final third to pick a pass."
Recent Struggles Under Rosenior
Chelsea's on-field performance has mirrored their transfer turmoil. After a promising start under Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca in January, the team has lost four consecutive games, including an 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG in the Champions League and Premier League losses to Newcastle and Everton. As Chelsea prepares for an FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale, Shearer's comments underscore the urgent need for strategic improvements if the club hopes to achieve its ambitions.
