Ex-Arsenal Star Thomas Partey Denies New Rape Charges in Court Appearance
Thomas Partey Pleads Not Guilty to Fresh Rape Allegations

Former Arsenal Midfielder Thomas Partey Enters Not Guilty Pleas to New Rape Charges

Thomas Partey, the former Arsenal midfielder, has pleaded not guilty to two fresh allegations of rape during a court appearance at Southwark Crown Court. The Ghanaian footballer, who now plays for Villarreal, appeared before Judge Tony Baumgartner, the Recorder of Westminster, on Monday to deny twice raping a woman in London on a single day in December 2020.

Expanding Legal Troubles for the Football Star

These new charges add to Partey's existing legal woes. He was previously charged in July with five counts of rape and one allegation of sexual assault, dating back to 2021 and 2022, to which he had already pleaded not guilty. With Monday's pleas, Partey now faces a total of seven rape charges and one count of sexual assault, all relating to allegations from four different women.

During the hearing, Partey, dressed in dark grey trousers, a black jumper over a white shirt, and smart black shoes, spoke clearly to confirm his name and enter his not guilty pleas. He left the dock with his charcoal grey suit jacket casually slung over his left shoulder.

Court Proceedings and Potential Trial Delay

Judge Baumgartner agreed that all allegations against Partey should be tried together in a single trial. However, he warned the footballer and legal representatives that this consolidation could potentially delay the trial until January of next year, rather than the originally scheduled November date.

Partey was notably absent from Westminster Magistrates' Court last month when the charges were first presented to a judge, though his lawyer had indicated at that time that not guilty pleas would be entered.

Football Career and Current Status

The 32-year-old midfielder joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 in a transfer valued at approximately £45 million. He departed the North London club on a free transfer last summer to join Spanish side Villarreal. Despite his legal challenges, Partey remains an integral part of the Ghana national team and is expected to feature against England in the upcoming World Cup this summer.

During the legal proceedings, Partey remains on bail with specific conditions, including a requirement that he does not contact any of the alleged victims. The court heard that Mr Justice Bennathan is expected to preside as the trial judge when the case proceeds.

Next Steps in the Legal Process

Partey's case is next scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on May 14. A definitive trial date will be established once the presiding judge has been formally confirmed. The footballer, who previously resided in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, continues to maintain his innocence against all allegations as the legal process unfolds.
