Tuchel Places Four Defenders Ahead of Maguire in England World Cup Plans
England national team manager Thomas Tuchel has delivered a frank assessment of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire's standing, revealing that four other centre-backs are currently ahead of the £80 million star in the pecking order for this summer's World Cup squad.
Maguire's Return and Solid Performance
The 33-year-old Maguire made his first England appearance since September 2024 this week, starting in the 1-1 draw against Uruguay at Wembley Stadium on Friday night. His return to the international fold comes after a period of impressive club form under Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, who took charge at Old Trafford in January.
Tuchel acknowledged Maguire's reliable performance against Uruguay, describing it as "solid, solid central defender play." He praised the defender's qualities, stating, "That's what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and a weapon for set-pieces."
The Four Defenders Ranked Above Maguire
Despite this positive review, Tuchel made it clear that Maguire faces stiff competition for a spot in the final World Cup roster. The England manager explicitly named four defenders he currently views as being ahead of the Manchester United captain.
The players Tuchel prioritizes are:
- Marc Guehi (Manchester City)
- John Stones (Manchester City)
- Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa)
- Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea)
"I haven't changed my mind but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile," Tuchel explained. "I see Ezri Konsa ahead, I see Marc Guehi ahead. It's no secret. I see Trevoh Chalobah on the level of mobility was slightly ahead of him."
Stones' Situation and Maguire's Tournament Value
Regarding John Stones, Tuchel noted the defender's recent injury issues, stating, "He had injuries, so he needed to come to camp. I needed to meet him in person to see how he acts within the group. It will be interesting now to see how he acts within the group. He will stay with us."
Tuchel did highlight Maguire's potential value in tournament football, particularly in specific game situations. "He has an asset, of course, that he can also be super important in a tournament, in knockout football, in defending a lead and chasing a game with crosses and long throw-ins and set-pieces," the manager conceded.
Uncertain World Cup Squad Inclusion
When pressed on whether Maguire would make the World Cup squad if it were selected immediately, Tuchel offered a non-committal response. "If, if, if. We don't need to name the squad tomorrow. He did a good game," Tuchel said. "He did what he does for Man United. He did it straight away. I'm very happy with him. To be honest, I haven't changed my mind. I got everything I expected from him."
The England manager added a pragmatic note about squad selection, saying, "If I have to name it tomorrow, we have a lot of injuries, he could be in it. Who else would be there in the centre of defence?" This comment underscores the competitive nature of England's defensive options as the World Cup approaches.
Tuchel's comments create significant intrigue around England's defensive selections for the upcoming tournament, placing particular scrutiny on Maguire's position despite his experience and recent return to form at club level.
