VAR Under Fire as Premier League Fans Voice Strong Opposition in New Poll
A comprehensive survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association (FSA) has unveiled a stark reality: three-quarters of Premier League fans oppose the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. The poll, which gathered responses from nearly 8,000 supporters, indicates a deep-seated dissatisfaction with the system's impact on the beautiful game.
Overwhelming Discontent with VAR's Influence
The findings are unequivocal. More than 97% of respondents disagreed that VAR makes watching football more enjoyable, highlighting a significant erosion of fan pleasure. Additionally, over 90% opposed the notion that VAR has improved the match-going experience, while 75.71% explicitly stated they do not support its use. Even the claim that VAR enhances refereeing accuracy was rejected by more than 70% of fans.
A primary source of frustration is the lengthy wait times for decisions. Fewer than 3% of those surveyed agreed that VAR verdicts are delivered within a reasonable timeframe. Despite ongoing efforts to expedite the process, an overwhelming majority feel that delays persist, undermining the flow of the game.
Loss of Spontaneity and Joy in Football
Perhaps the most poignant criticism centers on the emotional impact of VAR. Over 90% of fans believe the technology has stripped away the spontaneous joy of goal celebrations, turning moments of elation into anxious pauses. Thomas Concannon, Premier League network manager with the FSA, emphasized that these concerns echo findings from a 2021 survey, suggesting little progress has been made in addressing fan grievances.
"The vast majority are reporting the same concerns five years on—the loss of spontaneity when celebrating goals, and an overall worsening of the match-going experience," Concannon stated. The FSA has shared these results with the Premier League and the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO), seeking constructive dialogue on the future of VAR.
Mixed Views on Specific VAR Applications
While opposition to VAR is broad, the survey revealed nuanced opinions on its specific uses:
- Goal-line technology remains popular, with over 93% of fans supporting it, indicating a preference for limited, clear-cut technological interventions.
- More than half of respondents backed in-game announcements to explain VAR decisions, though overall communication processes are still viewed negatively.
- A slight majority supported using VAR to review red cards, but there is strong opposition to its application for offsides, fouls, and handballs in goal build-ups.
- Most fans opposed VAR checks for second yellow cards, while a slight majority favored introducing a challenge system to limit interventions.
Furthermore, more than 85% expressed concern about potential VAR expansion, such as reviewing corners next season—a measure opposed by over 70% of supporters. Encouragingly for lower leagues, over 80% of fans now prefer watching games without VAR, suggesting a growing appreciation for unmediated football.
