West Ham Offered £8m Celta Vigo Defender Oscar Mingueza in January Transfer Battle
West Ham offered ex-Barcelona star Oscar Mingueza

West Ham United have been presented with a significant opportunity to strengthen their struggling defence this January, with the chance to sign former Barcelona player Oscar Mingueza.

Defensive Crisis Sparks Urgent Search

The Hammers' need for new defensive recruits is acute. The club currently languishes in the Premier League relegation zone, sitting a worrying seven points from safety with just 17 games left to play. Their precarious position was compounded by a recent 2-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

On-field struggles have led to mounting fan frustration with the ownership, prompting the club to act in the transfer market. They have already invested heavily in attack, spending a combined £47 million on forwards Pablo Felipe and Taty Castellanos early in the window. However, their most glaring issue remains a leaky back line. West Ham have conceded 43 league goals this season, the worst record in the division.

The Mingueza Opportunity

According to a report from The Daily Mail, a solution has been offered to them. Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza has been made available to West Ham, alongside fellow Premier League sides Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

The Spanish club are seeking a fee of £8 million for the 26-year-old, who is in the final six months of his contract. Mingueza is a versatile defender, primarily a centre-back but capable of operating at right-back. He rose through the famed La Masia academy, making his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2020 before moving to Celta in 2022.

Since his transfer, he has become a mainstay in Galicia, making 121 appearances for Celta Vigo, contributing seven goals and 12 assists. Interest from the London Stadium is not new, with initial links emerging back in November.

A Critical Period On and Off the Pitch

The move for Mingueza represents a clear attempt to solidify a defence that has undermined the team's campaign. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo acknowledged the scale of the challenge ahead, stating of the points gap to safety: "It's a big gap. It's seven points. It is a reality, but this Club deserves the best from us."

West Ham face a busy schedule that runs parallel to the transfer window's final days, with fixtures against QPR in the FA Cup, followed by Premier League clashes with Tottenham, Sunderland, and Chelsea before the deadline shuts. Securing a defender of Mingueza's profile and experience could be crucial to their survival bid.
