West Ham's Callum Marshall seals Bochum loan after Nuno freeze-out
West Ham striker Callum Marshall joins Bochum on loan

West Ham United forward Callum Marshall has secured a January exit from the London Stadium, joining German second-tier club VfL Bochum on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

From Praise to the Sidelines: Marshall's Hammers Journey

The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international's departure comes after he found himself frozen out of manager Nuno Espirito Santo's plans, despite early-season praise. Marshall had been tipped for a potential breakthrough year after a successful loan at Huddersfield Town last season, where he scored nine League One goals and won the club's Player of the Year award.

He began the current season with West Ham, retained due to a lack of striking options under former boss Graham Potter. After making the bench for Nuno's first game in charge against Everton, Marshall earned substitute appearances against Arsenal and Brentford in October, even being selected ahead of experienced striker Callum Wilson.

Nuno had publicly praised the young striker's qualities in October, highlighting his energy, finishing, and mobility. "I think we have something that we can use," the manager said after the Arsenal match. However, the landscape changed rapidly for the academy graduate.

The Turning Point and Bochum Move

Marshall's last involvement in a matchday squad came in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at the start of December. His pathway was further blocked by the January arrivals of new strikers Taty Castellanos and Pablo, who moved ahead of him in the pecking order at the Premier League club.

This prompted the search for regular football elsewhere, culminating in the loan switch to Bochum, who are currently tenth in the 2. Bundesliga. The deal was officially confirmed by West Ham on Wednesday, 7th January 2026.

The club stated that Marshall will link up with Bochum, managed by former Manchester City forward Uwe Rösler, at their winter training camp in Belek, Turkey. He could make his debut for his new side at home to third-place SV Darmstadt on Sunday, 18th January.

What the Loan Means for Marshall's Future

This move represents a critical opportunity for Marshall to regain momentum in his development. Regular playing time in a competitive European league like Germany's second division will be invaluable for the young striker, who has already earned caps for Northern Ireland.

For West Ham, it allows a promising asset to gain experience while the first-team squad is reshaped under Nuno. The manager's decision to sanction the loan indicates that Marshall remains part of the club's long-term thinking, but needs to prove himself with consistent performances.

All eyes will now be on the Ruhrstadion to see if the 2023 FA Youth Cup winner can translate his potential into goals for Bochum as they aim to climb the table and challenge for promotion.
