West Ham United are reportedly in advanced discussions with Spanish La Liga side Valencia over a loan move for midfielder Guido Rodriguez during the current January transfer window. The deal is expected to be finalised before the deadline, marking a significant shift in the player's career at the London Stadium.
Rodriguez Deemed Surplus to Requirements Despite Spurs Cameo
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo has determined that the 31-year-old Argentine is surplus to requirements at West Ham, despite his recent appearance in the club's 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Rodriguez came off the bench for 11 minutes in that match, earning a 7/10 rating from Hammers News for his brief but effective contribution. However, this has not been enough to secure his future under the current regime.
Since joining West Ham on a free transfer from Real Betis in August 2024, Rodriguez has struggled for regular game time. He has made only eight appearances this season, with just two starts in the Premier League, only one of which came under Nuno's management. This limited involvement has also impacted his international career, with Rodriguez featuring just once for Argentina since June 2023.
Transfer Details and Midfield Overhaul at West Ham
According to reports from Tribuna Deportiva and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Valencia are closing in on a short-term loan agreement for Rodriguez. The Spanish club will cover his salary until June, with the deal nearing completion. Romano clarified that previous links to Juventus did not materialise, despite earlier reports from Italy.
This potential exit is part of a broader midfield reshuffle at West Ham. The club is anticipating significant changes in this area, with Lucas Paqueta set to depart for Flamengo and James Ward-Prowse reportedly a target for Burnley. Additionally, Soungoutou Magassa has been linked with a move away, despite his recent arrival.
In terms of potential incomings, West Ham had shown interest in Feyenoord's Quintin Timber, but Marseille appear to have secured that deal. The club is also monitoring Middlesbrough's Hayden Hackney as a possible reinforcement.
Rodriguez himself has acknowledged the challenges of his situation, stating that his lack of minutes at West Ham has understandably affected his national team prospects.
