London Broncos Plan Challenge Cup Fixture at The Stoop in 2026
London Broncos to play at The Stoop in 2026

The London Broncos are set for a significant change of scenery this season, with plans to host a Challenge Cup fixture at the Twickenham Stoop. This move forms part of the club's strategy under its new Australian ownership, led by NRL legend Darren Lockyer.

A New Era Under Australian Ownership

Darren Lockyer and a consortium of fellow Australians completed their acquisition of the Championship rugby league side in 2025. Their clear ambition is to guide a London team to victory in the Super League. The Broncos kick off their second-tier campaign this weekend against the Widnes Vikings at their current home, the 9,215-capacity Plough Lane, which they share with AFC Wimbledon.

The decision to explore a fixture at the Stoop, home of Premiership Rugby union side Harlequins, is driven by two key factors. Firstly, the club aims to better engage with the Australian expatriate community in the capital. Secondly, it provides a solution to anticipated pitch renovation work at Plough Lane this summer, which coincides with the rugby league season.

Broncos co-owner Grant Wechsel addressed the situation, stating, "The only issue we have with Plough Lane is the pitch renovation and how long that will take." He confirmed the club would work with AFC Wimbledon on a solution for next season, describing the issue as "fairly workable."

This won't be the Broncos' first experience at a Twickenham venue. The club has had two previous spells at the larger, 14,800-seat Twickenham Stadium. Wechsel highlighted the historical connection, adding, "This year we've got a couple of games scheduled later in the season at the Stoop, and obviously there's a bit of history there for us."

Future Ambitions and Cup Focus

The club's fixture list currently indicates a match against Featherstone Rovers in June will be held at the Stoop. However, Featherstone's financial troubles and subsequent denial of a Championship place for this year may alter those plans. Wechsel also revealed considerations for a game at Ebbsfleet United's Kuflink Stadium against Doncaster.

Looking ahead, the ownership is committed to a strong Challenge Cup campaign. Wechsel, an Australian mining magnate, insists the team will "go all in" for the competition, drawn by the prospect of defeating Super League opponents and potentially reaching the final at Wembley Stadium.

The Broncos enter the Challenge Cup in the second round, facing Wests Warriors at Plough Lane. A potential third-round tie against fellow Championship side Bradford Bulls in February is flagged as another possible fixture for the Stoop. Wechsel concluded by noting the club's awareness of its nomadic past, but acknowledged the Stoop's larger capacity could be beneficial for bigger cup ties and a potential future in the Super League.
