Snooker Star Gary Wilson's 'Complete Embarrassment' in Dramatic Crucible Qualifier

Gary Wilson has clinched a spot at the Crucible Theatre for the World Snooker Championship, but his journey was marked by what he called 'complete embarrassment' in an 'absolutely nuts' qualifier match. The Tyneside Terror edged out Xu Si 10-9 in a nail-biting encounter, though the victory came with significant self-criticism from the player.

A Rollercoaster Match with Unexpected Twists

Wilson burst into a commanding 7-2 lead early in the match, suggesting a comfortable path to victory. This followed a dominant 10-1 win over Allan Taylor in the previous round. However, Wilson revealed he never felt at ease during either game, stating, 'People weren't believing us the other day when I played Allan [Taylor] and it was 10-1 and I said I'm struggling. I was genuinely struggling.'

The momentum shifted dramatically as Xu Si mounted a fierce comeback, surging ahead to a 9-8 lead. Wilson faltered but managed to scrap his way into a decider. In the final frame, he produced a stunning break of 126 to secure the win, showcasing his resilience under pressure.

Wilson's Candid Reflections on Performance

Despite the triumph, Wilson was brutally honest about his play. 'Absolutely nuts,' he told WST, describing the win over Xu. 'From ball one today I had no cueing whatsoever. Again I got a good lead, I was getting chances again, maybe he was a bit nervous. I potted a few good balls, but I was making breaks just steering in and trying.'

He added, 'The table was playing lovely so it was allowing us to get away with things. Tonight was even worse I just couldn't cue a ball even more, I thought it was a complete embarrassment.' Wilson emphasized the importance of effort in such a high-stakes tournament, saying, 'At the end there, it's the biggest tournament we have, if you can't try everything here, when are you ever going to try? That last break at the end there was just sheer try.'

Looking Ahead to the Crucible and Beyond

While making a century break in a deciding frame to reach the Crucible is a notable achievement, Wilson remains focused on improvement. 'It's all that counts but it doesn't count for much going forward and that's always the problem with me,' he said of the impressive break. 'If I play anything like that at the Crucible I'll be happy to pick up me points, pick up me walk-ons for the two sessions, pick up me money and anything after that is a bonus.'

The 40-year-old, who will enter the World Snooker Championship draw for a sixth time, has a mixed record at the iconic venue. He reached the semi-finals in 2019 but has won only one match there since. This season, his standout results include a final run at the Wuhan Open, a semi-final at the Xi'an Grand Prix, and a quarter-final at the World Open, all in China.

Wilson expressed frustration but also determination: 'I seriously need to try to find a way to cue the ball properly to have any chance to do what I feel I can do deep down, which is play much better than that, go deep in tournaments and win tournaments again.' He concluded, 'It's so frustrating but at the same time I'm over the moon to try my hardest there and somehow scrape through. I've always known I've got bottle and that's all that was.'

The World Snooker Championship draw is set to take place, with Wilson aiming to add to his three ranking titles and make a deep run in the tournament over the coming weeks.
