UK holidaymakers are being urged to check their airline's specific luggage policies before travelling in 2026, as strict rules from carriers like Ryanair, EasyJet and Jet2 can lead to unexpected and expensive charges at the airport.
Each airline enforces its own set of regulations on the size and weight of both hand luggage and checked baggage. Exceeding these limits typically results in hefty fees, which are almost always higher if paid at the airport rather than booked online in advance.
By measuring and weighing bags at home, passengers can ensure they comply and enjoy a smoother, less stressful check-in experience.
Ryanair's 2026 Baggage Policy
All Ryanair fares include a small personal bag that must fit under the seat in front. For additional luggage, passengers can purchase extra allowance online. Hold luggage starts from 9.49 euros for a 10kg bag when checked in online ahead of travel.
EasyJet's Cabin Bag Allowance Explained
EasyJet permits one free small under-seat cabin bag per person, with maximum dimensions of 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including handles and wheels). This bag must be stowed under the seat and can weigh up to 15kg.
Passengers can also book a large cabin bag (max 56 x 45 x 25 cm) to bring on board. The maximum number of cabin bags allowed per person is two. The airline also suggests travellers can 'beat the rush' by dropping off hold bags the evening before their flight.
What Jet2 Passengers Need to Know
On Jet2.com flights, a 10kg hand luggage allowance is included as standard for each passenger, excluding infants. One additional small under-seat bag is also permitted, provided it fits under the seat.
For infants, an extra 10kg allowance is provided, and up to two items per child or infant – such as a pushchair, car seat, or travel cot – can be brought free of charge.
Familiarising yourself with these detailed rules before packing is the best way to ensure a hassle-free start to your holiday and avoid unwelcome surprises at the airport.
