Major Haringey Road to Close for Nine Months as Thames Water Upgrades Victorian Pipes

A significant road closure is set to impact the Haringey area, with Thames Water announcing that Crouch Hill will be shut for approximately nine months as part of a major water infrastructure project. The work, which commenced on February 9, 2026, involves upgrading eight kilometres of ageing Victorian pipes across the borough.

Extensive Works Across Multiple Streets

The £13 million initiative will affect a total of 29 streets in Crouch End and surrounding neighbourhoods over the course of the year. In addition to the prolonged closure of Crouch Hill between The Broadway and Haringey Park, other key routes will face significant disruptions.

Ridge Road will be closed from Ferme Park Road to Nelson Road for around five months, while various other streets will experience rolling closures and traffic management measures. Works are scheduled from Monday to Friday between 7.30am and 5.30pm, with additional Saturday operations from 8am to 2pm.

Infrastructure Improvements and Community Impact

Thames Water states that replacing the cast-iron Victorian pipes with modern plastic alternatives will substantially reduce leakages and pipe bursts in the area. A company spokesperson acknowledged the inevitable disruption, saying: "We're sorry for the disruption this essential work will cause. We'll do everything we can to keep this to a minimum."

While resident and business access will be maintained throughout the project, along with emergency vehicle access, the community should prepare for considerable inconvenience. Parking bay suspensions will be implemented in phases, and some bus routes will be diverted. Residents can also expect increased noise levels and additional vehicle movements in the affected areas.

Detailed Timeline of Affected Areas

  • The Broadway: Two-way traffic lights from February 9 for approximately one month
  • Crouch Hill: Full road closure from The Broadway to Haringey Park with W7 bus diversion from February 9 for around nine months
  • Ridge Road: Road closure from Ferme Park Road to Nelson Road from February 16 for about five months
  • Oakington Way: Road closure from February 23 for approximately two weeks
  • Briston Grove: Road closure from March 10 for around four weeks
  • Elm Grove: 100-150 metre rolling road closure from April 7 for about six weeks

The water company emphasises that this planned renewal work will ultimately prevent more disruptive, unexpected pipe bursts in the future, though local residents and businesses face a challenging period of adjustment to the extensive roadworks.
