Pothole Damage Costs UK Drivers £164 on Average, Survey Reveals

A comprehensive new survey has exposed the severe impact of potholes on British motorists, revealing that one in three cars have sustained damage from these road hazards, with repair costs averaging £164 per incident. The research, commissioned by CarSupermarket.com and conducted by OnePoll.com, polled 2,000 car owners across the United Kingdom, uncovering widespread frustration with deteriorating road infrastructure.

Widespread Vehicle Damage and Physical Injuries

The study found that 32 percent of drivers have experienced car breakdowns or damage due to potholes, with punctured tyres being the most common issue at 55 percent. Suspension problems affected 28 percent of respondents, while damaged alloys impacted 26 percent. Alarmingly, more than one in twenty drivers, approximately six percent, reported suffering physical injuries such as whiplash, back pain, and neck pain from pothole-related incidents.

Matt Barrick, CEO of CarSupermarket.com, commented on the findings, stating, "Potholes are a persistent problem for drivers, so it is no surprise they rank among the biggest frustrations on UK roads. They can cause significant damage, create serious safety concerns, and add unnecessary financial burdens for motorists."

Deteriorating Road Conditions and Driver Behavior

Nearly half of surveyed motorists, 47 percent, believe road conditions have become "much worse" over the past five years, with 21 percent describing current conditions as "very poor." The research also highlighted concerning driving behaviors, with 56 percent of respondents feeling road users are less courteous than they were five years ago.

Common driver grievances extend beyond potholes to include:

  • Drivers failing to indicate (59 percent)
  • Tailgating (57 percent)
  • Drivers using mobile phones (54 percent)
  • Parking across two spaces (48 percent)
  • Pedestrians crossing without looking (40 percent)

Reporting and Repair Challenges

Despite widespread frustration, 41 percent of drivers admitted they don't know how to report potholes to local authorities for repair. Matt Barrick emphasized the importance of proper reporting procedures: "It is very easy to report a pothole or road damage. You can visit your local council's website or report by phone. Councils typically investigate within 10 working days and decide whether to fix the problem, add it to long-term works, or take no action."

The survey revealed that 22 percent of drivers avoid at least 11 potholes during typical journeys, while 37 percent have been forced to swerve dangerously to avoid road cavities. In response to these findings, CarSupermarket.com has launched an initiative to repair and recondition potholes, aligning with their broader focus on vehicle reconditioning and quality standards.

Driver Self-Perception and Road Rage

Interestingly, the research uncovered a significant gap in how drivers perceive themselves versus others on the road. On average, motorists rated their own driving skills at 7.45 out of 10, while rating other drivers at just 5.97. When confronted with frustrating driving behaviors, 43 percent of respondents admitted to ranting to themselves, 24 percent beep their horns, and 17 percent swear at offending drivers.

As passenger behavior, 41 percent would suffer in silence when witnessing a driver's offense, while 17 percent would confront the driver directly. These findings underscore the growing tension and safety concerns on UK roadways, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure improvements and better driver education.
