Transport for London (TfL) has pledged to repaint a dilapidated bridge in West London, described by locals as an "eyesore", following sustained pressure from the community and the local council.
Campaign Success for Local Residents
The transport authority confirmed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) that it will complete the work on the bridge connecting Shepherd's Bush Market and Goldhawk Road stations by the end of March 2026. This commitment comes after Hammersmith and Fulham Council successfully lobbied TfL on behalf of residents.
The campaign gained significant momentum earlier this year when a petition calling for the area to be "cleaned up and restored" garnered almost 3,000 signatures. It was presented to the council's Cabinet in September, with the authority subsequently reiterating its commitment to improving Uxbridge Road.
A 'Depressing Sight' Set for a Makeover
For many living nearby, the announcement marks the end of a long period of visual blight. Local resident Angela, who declined to give her surname, expressed her delight, stating she has had to look at the "rather depressing sight almost daily" for over 28 years.
"I am delighted to hear that the bridge will be painted, as it has been an eyesore for many years," she said. "I very much look forward to seeing a newly painted bridge by the end of March 2026 with a more pleasant outlook."
Another resident, Monika Skinder, was equally supportive, simply stating: "They should [repaint it]. It looks terrible." Mary Henry added that while she backed the plans, a wider clean-up of the Shepherd's Bush area was also needed.
More Than Just a Coat of Paint
Councillor Zarar Qayyum, Hammersmith and Fulham's Cabinet Member for Enterprise and Skills, framed the project as part of a broader vision. "We are delighted that TfL has agreed to work with residents to deliver a new-look bridge," he said. "This will be a centrepiece of Uxbridge Road as a vibrant and attractive place to live and visit."
He emphasised that the project is about more than paint – it's about demonstrating that public spaces are valued. This repainting forms part of a larger programme aimed at making Uxbridge Road more attractive, accessible, and safe.
The petition's organiser, Noor, welcomed the "long-awaited" step but called for a more comprehensive approach. They expressed hope the work would be "tasteful" and include full restoration and cleaning. They also urged TfL to use the opportunity to restore and modernise the adjacent Shepherd's Bush Market Station, advocating for a "joined-up approach" to enhance the entire gateway area.
While some local shop owners were sceptical about the impact, the resident-led campaign group, Let's Fix Uxbridge Road, continues to push for wider improvements to the highway, building on the momentum generated by the bridge campaign.
