London Underground Worker Hospitalized After Staircase Collapse at Depot
A London Underground security worker was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a metal staircase collapsed at a depot in Southwark. The incident occurred at London Road Depot on November 2 last year, when the rusted staircase gave way as the worker was climbing down from a portable container to begin a patrol.
Details of the Incident and Injuries
The worker sustained injuries to his head, hand, and leg in the 10pm collapse. An accident log revealed that a subsequent site inspection found the staircase was severely corroded, with significant rusting and deterioration of the bolts securing the steps. The investigation summary stated the collapse resulted from metal corrosion and structural weakness, noting the stairs appeared weathered but without visible rust contamination to the officer.
The security worker was signed off work for more than two months, until January 8, to aid his recovery and underwent physiotherapy. In response to a Freedom of Information request, a TfL case officer emphasized that staff and customer safety is always their top priority, with continuous efforts to reduce incidents and injuries.
TfL's Safety Response and Broader Context
TfL has since reviewed similar staircases across the transport network. A spokesperson confirmed they are determined to learn from safety incidents, investigating each serious case and implementing measures to prevent recurrences. Following this incident, TfL carried out a review of site safety inspections and maintenance procedures, pledging to work with colleagues and contractors to ensure everyone's safety.
A report submitted to the Safety and Security Panel revealed there were 23 serious injuries among TfL workers between April and December 2025. The transport authority is behind target in its efforts to reduce the injury tally to 17 for the year. Over the same period in 2024, there were 19 serious injuries, along with one death when Elizabeth line worker Jorge Ortega, 61, was fatally attacked at Ilford station.
This incident highlights ongoing safety challenges within London's transport infrastructure, prompting renewed scrutiny of maintenance protocols and worker protection measures.
