Easter Rail Chaos: London Euston to Shut for 6 Days, Disrupting Thousands
London Euston Shuts 6 Days, Easter Rail Disruption Hits Thousands

Thousands of Easter rail journeys across Britain are set for significant disruption as Network Rail confirms a six-day closure of a critical section of the West Coast Main Line (WCML). Engineering works will halt all intercity services between London Euston and Milton Keynes from Good Friday, April 3, through Wednesday, April 8, with normal operations resuming on Thursday, April 9.

Major Infrastructure Upgrades

This extensive closure is part of a £400 million investment scheme aimed at enhancing the reliability of the WCML, which holds the distinction of being Europe's busiest railway line for both passenger and freight traffic. The Easter period provides a crucial window for engineers to execute projects that are impossible to complete during standard weekends due to higher traffic volumes.

Key Work Locations

Specific upgrade sites include North West London, where fresh track will be installed at Willesden, and Harrow and Wealdstone station, which will undergo essential repairs and improvements. Additionally, in Ledburn, Buckinghamshire, a bridge will receive enhanced protection measures to prevent future damage and ensure long-term safety.

Widespread Network Disruptions

The impact extends far beyond the WCML. Over the Easter weekend, more than 270 other enhancement schemes are scheduled across Britain's rail network. Notably, no WCML trains will operate between Preston and Lancaster on Saturday, April 4, and Easter Sunday, April 5.

To mitigate some disruptions, Avanti West Coast will operate services between Preston and Carlisle via the scenic Settle and Carlisle line. Anglo-Scottish trains will be rerouted via Dumfries and Kilmarnock from Good Friday through Easter Monday.

Additional Service Reductions

Passengers on other routes should also prepare for changes. Services between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction will be reduced during the Easter period. Furthermore, there will be no train services between Winchester and Southampton in Hampshire, or between Herne Bay and Ramsgate in Kent.

Network Rail's Statement

Jake Kelly, Network Rail's regional director for the North West and Central region, addressed the planned disruptions. "We know how important bank holidays are – particularly at Easter, when families and friends come together – and that's why we work hard to keep as much of the network open as possible whilst carrying out these vital upgrades," he stated.

Kelly emphasized the strategic timing: "However, bank holidays are also among the least busy times on the railway, and the four-day period at Easter gives us a valuable opportunity to complete projects that simply can't be delivered during a normal weekend. This ensures we maximise the time our teams are out working on the tracks. So passengers will see some changes and it's a good idea for people to check before they travel."

Travelers are strongly advised to check their journey details with relevant train operators well in advance of Easter to navigate the widespread alterations and closures efficiently.
