For the first time in its history, the County Durham seaside town of Seaham will enjoy a direct railway connection to the capital, marking a significant boost for the North East.
A Historic New Rail Link
From December 2025, operator Grand Central will launch four direct services daily in each direction between Seaham and London King's Cross. This move ends the need for passengers to change trains during their journey to the capital.
Previously, the trip could take around four hours. The new direct service will reduce the total travel time by 30 minutes, bringing it down to three and a half hours. This improved connectivity is poised to make the town more accessible for tourists and business travellers alike.
Affordable Fares and Local Ambition
Advance tickets for the new route will be available from just £30.50 per person, offering a budget-friendly option for those planning a trip.
Chris Brandon, director at Grand Central, stated the launch reflects the town's growing needs. "For the first time in history, residents here have a direct, reliable connection to London," he said. The investment is part of a wider £300 million order for new trains and efforts to secure more track access in the region.
Local MP for Easington, Grahame Morris, welcomed the development, highlighting that the East Durham coastline has been underused for decades. He expressed delight that Grand Central had recognised the route's "enormous potential."
Discovering Seaham: A Gem on the Durham Coast
Seaham is a vibrant harbour town situated on Durham's coastline, approximately a 20-minute drive from Sunderland. It is a popular destination for day trippers, renowned for its striking cliffs, sandy beaches, and deep-seated maritime history.
This new direct rail link is expected to put this underrated scenic spot firmly on the map for Londoners and other visitors, supporting local tourism and the regional economy.
