Community raises £3,620 to buy new car for Evri driver Ann West after breakdown
Community raises £3,620 for Evri driver's new car

An Evri delivery driver who had to leave her job after her car broke down was astonished to discover that her loyal customers had secretly raised £3,620 to buy her a new vehicle. Ann West, 59, had served the community in and around Shorne, Kent, for six years as part of her two-decade career with the delivery company.

Car breakdown forces difficult decision

When Ann's car broke down last month, she could not afford repairs or a replacement. After hiring a car for a week at a cost of nearly £300, she realised she could not continue. “I couldn’t afford to hire a car any longer… there was nothing I could do. You need a car to do the delivery. So I had to say, sorry I’ve got to go,” she said. She filled out an online form to end her delivery round, believing that was the end of it.

Community secret whip-round

Unbeknownst to Ann, who also cares for her two granddaughters aged 8 and 14, her grateful customers had hatched a plan. Nigel Miller, a Shorne resident of 35 years, spoke with Ann on her last day about her car troubles. He then posted in the Pear Tree Road community group: “Does anyone fancy a whip-round to help?” The idea quickly gained support. Andrew Karim, who runs green technology firm Active Kinetic 1, set up a fundraising page called “Ann’s community car fund” on June 9. Within three days, donations exceeded £1,500, and as of today, 85 people have contributed a total of £3,620.

Surprise reveal and emotional reunion

This week, Ann was reunited with some of the contributors, and the funds were transferred into her account. “I was really shocked, and it brought a little tear to my eye. It was definitely a surprise – a nice surprise,” she said. The group had arranged a group call to tell her they had “a little something” for her. Ann immediately contacted her Evri field manager, who confirmed she could have her round back.

Community spirit and impact

Nova Molloy, a contributor, said: “I think it shows what an impact Ann made. It was nice to give back because times are tough for everybody – but it’s nice to do something and to actually see an impact.” Nigel Miller added: “Ann supports the community and it’s nice when the community can support her. It shows the power of that. She’s not just someone that throws a parcel at you and walks away.” Andrew Karim hopes the story inspires others: “I hope that people don’t just see it as just a fundraiser, I hope they see it as a way to actually bring the community together, achieve something. And now look – we’ve got Ann back.”

Back on the road

Ann plans to purchase a car and return to work by the end of the month. The community's initiative has not only restored her livelihood but also strengthened local bonds. “It’s brought our community together and made us a lot closer,” Andrew said.
