England WAGs hit back after Roy Keane's criticism of World Cup attire

England WAGs have hit back at Roy Keane after the pundit criticised their choice of wearing replica England shirts with their partners' names on the back during the 2026 World Cup. Keane, 54, made the comments on Gary Neville's podcast, The Overlap, branding the attire 'ridiculous' and questioning the point of it.

WAGs respond: 'He's a miserable old git'

According to a friend of some of the WAGs, the women are adamant they will continue wearing the shirts. 'Why should they let someone like Roy Keane tell them otherwise? He's a miserable old git,' the insider told the Daily Mail. 'The girls love to show support for their partners by wearing their names on their back, or at least an England shirt. It's a case of "Go away, grandad".'

Some of the WAGs have been amused by the controversy. 'Some of them ignored it; some have been giggling at why they wind him up so much,' the source added.

Keane's original remarks

On The Overlap, Keane was asked what he would put into Room 101. He said: 'All the wives are in their jerseys with the players' names on the back… Wow.' He argued that children wearing the shirts is fine, but wives doing so is over the top. 'A year later, they're separated, most of them! And they're all getting pictures, pointing at the Jimmy or Johnny on the back… Wow. Well, we know you're married… It's ridiculous.'

Ian Wright, a fellow panelist, disagreed, saying he doesn't mind it as it shows the partners are proud. But Keane pressed: 'They only do it at the World Cup. They don't do it at Old Trafford or Anfield every week, do they? So what's with this World Cup?'

WAGs at the 2026 World Cup

The 2026 World Cup has been described as the most glamorous yet, with many WAGs flying to the US to support the England team. Among them are Jordan Pickford's wife Megan Davison, whom he met at secondary school and married in March 2020, Declan Rice's partner Lauren Fryer, who has been with him for a decade, Bukayo Saka's girlfriend Tolami Benson, Harry Kane's wife Kate Goodland, and Jude Bellingham's influencer girlfriend Ashlyn Castro. They have been documenting their trip on Instagram, boasting thousands of followers.

England's performance

The WAGs had reason to celebrate after England beat Panama 2-0 in their final group match, finishing top of Group L in New Jersey. Thomas Tuchel's squad will next face DR Congo on July 1 in Atlanta. If they win, they will play either Mexico or Ecuador in the round of 16, with hopes of advancing to the quarterfinal.
