Veteran Dad Cycles 31 Miles to Job Interview, Lands Warehouse Role
A Parachute Regiment veteran and single father of twin girls cycled 31 miles to a job interview after being unable to afford a taxi, ultimately securing the position. Rob Vigar, 31, from Colchester, embarked on the arduous journey to Stowmarket, setting off at 2:30 a.m. to make a 5:45 a.m. appointment for a warehouse operative role.
Financial Hardship Forces Extreme Commute
After quitting his job as a plastic welder in March, Rob found himself in a tight financial spot, with dozens of applications leading to this opportunity. When a planned lift fell through and Uber fares exceeded £60, he turned to his bicycle as the only viable option. "I physically had no other option because I'm a single father of twin girls, and I needed the job," Rob explained. "My mindset is 'I have to get there, and I have to achieve this goal.'"
The cycle took two hours and 25 minutes, arriving at 4:55 a.m., giving him time to freshen up before the interview. He shared the trip on social media, highlighting his determination. "I checked all Ubers, and they were all 60-odd pounds, and I wasn't in the financial situation to pay that," he added. "I just said 'this is clearly the start of my journey and I have to do this.'"
Successful Interview Leads to New Beginnings
The interview went well, and Rob was offered a 13-week trial period with the company, leaving him "on top of the world." He returned to Colchester by train to be home for his daughters' school day but plans to cycle daily until his first paycheck. "At the moment, I'm not in a financial situation to afford a vehicle or any form of public transport," he stated.
Rob's story underscores the challenges faced by many in the job market, especially single parents and veterans. His resilience paid off, as the warehouse job offers structure, routine, and time with his children. "I'm ready to move forward with my life," he said, reflecting on the new opportunity.
