UK Travel Industry Faces Unprecedented Wave of Company Closures in 2026
While planning a holiday typically involves excitement about destinations and activities, few travelers consider the possibility that their entire trip could be canceled due to their travel company going bankrupt. This scenario has become increasingly common, with multiple UK-based travel firms collapsing in 2026, leaving holidaymakers stranded and scrambling for alternatives.
The Growing Trend of Travel Company Failures
The travel industry has experienced a troubling pattern of closures over the past year. In April 2025, Balkan Holidays ceased operations after nearly six decades of trading, canceling trips to popular destinations including Croatia, Montenegro, and Malta. Just two months later, Great Little Escapes followed suit, ending its package holidays to iconic cities worldwide, including Italian destinations and the Balearic Islands.
December 2025 saw another casualty when Ickenham Travel Group, founded in 1970, entered administration. This trend has continued into 2026, with several more holiday companies folding, creating uncertainty for thousands of travelers.
Complete List of 2026 Travel Company Closures
Gold Crest Holidays (ABTA Protected: Yes)
The West Yorkshire-based coach operator ceased trading on January 23, 2026, immediately canceling all future trips and package holidays. The family-run business, which had organized coach trips throughout the UK and Europe for thirty years, cited multiple challenges in a farewell statement.
'This difficult decision follows the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, strategic changes in key partner arrangements that adversely affected our business, and a challenging trading environment with significantly rising costs,' the company explained. 'We are immensely grateful to our loyal customers, travel agents, suppliers, and dedicated staff for your support over the years. We are truly sorry we can no longer continue.'
Asiara UK (ATOL Protected: Yes)
Originally known as Haivenu Tours before rebranding as Asiara UK, this Ipswich-based travel company launched in 2022, offering packages and tours across Asian destinations including Thailand, China, India, Japan, and Singapore. The business ceased trading as an ATOL holder on January 21, 2026.
Unlike other closures, Protected Trust Services indicated that Asiara UK had no forward bookings at the time of closure, suggesting a managed wind-down of operations before complete cessation.
Simply Florida (ATOL Protected: Yes)
This Glasgow-based travel agency specialized in holidays to destinations including Disneyland, Disney World, Universal Studios, New York, Toronto, and Niagara Falls, along with cruise packages. After filing to be removed from the Companies House register in October 2025, Simply Florida officially ceased trading on January 20, 2026.
Holidaymakers anticipating trips to Disney World and Universal Studios faced cancellations, though ATOL protection should ensure full refunds for affected customers.
Regen Central Ltd (ATOL Protected: Previously yes, but no outstanding protected bookings)
The London-based company, originally founded in Hertfordshire in 2007 before relocating to the capital, entered liquidation on January 13, 2026. Regen Central Ltd sold flight and hotel packages for European and Southeast Asian destinations.
ATOL confirmed that the company had 'no outstanding ATOL-protected bookings' at the time of closure, meaning no refunds would be issued through the protection scheme. The ATOL failures page clarified: 'Bookings sold as accommodation only, non-flight packages, and flight only bookings for which tickets were issued are not protected by the ATOL scheme.'
Understanding Travel Protection Schemes
Both ATOL (Air Travel Organisers Licensing) and ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) provide financial protection for UK travelers when their holiday company collapses. ATOL specifically covers flight-based holidays, assisting with refunds and repatriation for stranded travelers abroad. ABTA protects holidays that don't involve flights, including train journeys, cruises, and road trips, helping with complaints and refund processes.
According to Citizens Advice, travelers are entitled to full refunds when companies cancel their holidays. Through ATOL protection, customers receive refunds for package elements, though separately booked components like car hire remain uncovered. While ATOL may occasionally arrange alternative operators to take over trips, this outcome is described as 'rare and not guaranteed' by financial experts.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority advises: 'If you are due to travel on an ATOL protected trip and your travel company has ceased as an ATOL holder, we will offer advice on what steps to take. We'll let you know how to claim an ATOL refund. Our advice will often be either not to travel or, if you are in possession of flight tickets issued by the airline and they have confirmed they are valid, you can travel but you may need to pay for the cost of replacement services and then claim for these.'
European Hotel Chain Also Faces Insolvency
While not UK-based, Revo Hospitality Group (formerly HR Group), Europe's largest hotel operator with over 260 properties across twelve countries including the UK, declared insolvency on January 16, 2026. The company cited the 'economic crisis' as the primary catalyst, along with increased wage costs, sharp rises in minimum wages, and higher expenses for rent, energy, and food.
The hotel group stated: 'Around 140 companies belonging to the REVO Hospitality Group have filed for insolvency under their own management at Charlottenburg District Court. The approximately 125 hotels in Germany and Austria will continue to operate with all 5,500 employees.' The company emphasized that expansion had led to duplicate structures and integration problems, though the goal remains business reorganization rather than complete shutdown.
Currently, many Revo properties across Europe remain operational with bookings being honored, and the company has applied for German government support to ensure continued wage payments to employees.
This list of travel company closures will be updated as the situation develops, so travelers should verify their operator's status before finalizing holiday preparations.
