After Smith revealed his job loss to the Guardian, a fundraising campaign was swiftly launched on his behalf, rapidly accumulating over £2,000 in donations. The organizer emphasized that Smith had "simply tried to do the right and noble thing" by acting against the theft. Smith, aged 54, detailed that a customer alerted him to an individual filling a bag with premium chocolate eggs, noting the shoplifter was a known repeat offender at the store.
In the ensuing confrontation, Smith grabbed the bag, but the shoplifter snatched it back, leading to a brief struggle. The bag eventually snapped, scattering the items across the floor. Smith admitted that one of the chocolate bunnies shattered, and in a moment of frustration, he threw a piece toward some shopping trolleys, firmly asserting he did not aim at the fleeing shoplifter. The shadow home secretary, Chris Philp, has vocally demanded Waitrose reverse its decision, labeling the supermarket's actions as "disgraceful". In a social media post featuring a letter to Waitrose managing director Tom Denyard, Philp urged the company to reinstate Smith and award him a bonus for his "bravery and initiative". Philp argued that while staff safety is paramount, dismissing a long-serving employee in these circumstances sends a detrimental message, effectively penalizing proactive individuals while allowing offenders to operate unchecked.
Philp further stressed that although police and government efforts are crucial in combating shoplifting, store staff and the public should be encouraged to intervene responsibly. He warned that without such support, shoplifting rates will continue to surge uncontrollably. This incident occurs against a backdrop of rising shoplifting offences, which increased by 5% in the year to September 2025, according to recent statistical data.
