Nintendo Switch 2 Surpasses PS5 in US Sales, Fueled by Pokémon Pokopia Launch
Switch 2 Outperforms PS5 in US Sales with Pokémon Boost

Nintendo Switch 2 Regains Sales Lead Over PS5 in the US

The Nintendo Switch 2 has surged back to become the highest-selling console in the United States for March 2026, overtaking Sony's PlayStation 5 after a period of slower performance earlier in the year. This resurgence follows the launch of the highly anticipated game Pokémon Pokopia, which has been credited as a key driver in boosting hardware sales.

Sales Momentum Shifts with Pokémon Pokopia Release

According to data from Circana, a leading market research firm, the Switch 2 led both unit and dollar sales in March, pushing the PS5 into second place for the month. Senior director Mat Piscatella highlighted that the Switch 2 is also the best-selling platform year-to-date in 2026, indicating a strong overall performance despite previous concerns about sales momentum in Western markets.

Nintendo had previously noted that sales in the West were slightly weaker than expected during the Christmas season, with the PS5 outperforming the Switch 2 in the US throughout January and February. Factors such as competitive PlayStation 5 bundles and a game library more appealing to Japanese audiences were cited as potential reasons for this lag.

Hardware Spending Sees Significant Growth

March 2026 saw a substantial increase in hardware spending, rising by 69% compared to the same period last year to reach $500 million (£370 million). The Switch 2 was identified as the primary contributor to this overall gain, while PlayStation 5 spending grew by a modest 3%. Piscatella described Pokémon Pokopia as a system seller, with the game ranking as the fifth highest-selling title of the month based on physical sales alone, as Nintendo does not release digital sales data.

If digital sales were included, Pokémon Pokopia might have challenged the current top-selling game, MLB: The Show 26, for the number one position. Other notable entries in the sales charts include WWE 2K26 at third place and Bungie's Marathon, which was the highest-selling game on PC in March and ranks sixth best-selling across all platforms year-to-date.

Future Outlook and Market Dynamics

Despite the Switch 2's current lead, Piscatella cautioned that the console may face competition in the coming months. A surge in PlayStation 5 sales was observed at the end of March following a price hike announcement, which could impact April's sales rankings. Additionally, new game releases such as Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection and Crimson Desert have entered the charts, with the latter's position likely understated due to the exclusion of digital sales data.

In terms of year-to-date performance, Resident Evil Requiem remains the highest-selling game overall, with its sequel already ranking among the top five best-selling Resident Evil titles in all-time dollar sales after just two months on the market.

When compared to the original Nintendo Switch, the Switch 2's unit sales are 12% higher over the first 10 months, suggesting that any earlier slowdown was a temporary setback rather than a long-term trend. This data underscores the dynamic nature of the gaming hardware market, where exclusive titles and strategic releases can swiftly alter sales trajectories.
