Heatwave Power Cut Compensation: Your Rights Explained
Heatwave Power Cut Compensation Rights Explained

The UK Health Security Agency has extended a Red Heat Health Alert for six regions including London until 9pm on Friday, June 26, as a record-breaking June heatwave threatens essential services. Residents may be entitled to compensation if power, trains, internet, or water supplies are disrupted.

Power Cut Compensation

If a power cut affects fewer than 5,000 premises, residents can claim £95 after 12 hours without electricity, followed by £45 for every subsequent 12-hour period. For gas supply interruptions, a minimum of £70 compensation applies for every 24 hours without supply.

Train Delays

Soaring temperatures can cause train tracks to expand and buckle, leading to delays and cancellations. Passengers delayed by 15 to 29 minutes are entitled to 25% compensation, while delays over an hour warrant a full refund.

Internet Outages

According to Ofcom, customers experiencing internet outages lasting beyond two working days can claim £10.34 per day.

Water Supply Disruptions

Water supply disruptions not resolved within 12 hours entitle customers to £20 for the first 24 hours, then £10 for each subsequent day. Water companies must arrange alternative supplies like bottled water or tankers for outages exceeding 12 hours. However, compensation may not apply if extreme heat prevents restoration.
