A cyclist in his 30s is fighting for his life after being hit by an unmarked police car in Bermondsey on Friday evening. The collision occurred on Long Lane, a busy road in Southwark, shortly before 9pm on June 26.
Emergency response collision
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the unmarked police vehicle was responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash. Paramedics rushed the injured man to hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening condition. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Independent investigation launched
The incident has been reported to the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has begun an independent investigation. A force spokesperson stated: "At around 8.55pm on Friday, June 26, an unmarked police car responding to an emergency call collided with a cyclist on Long Lane, Bermondsey. The man on the bike, who is in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition."
The spokesperson added: "No arrests have been made and the road is now clear. As is standard practice, the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have been informed about the incident. The IOPC has begun an independent investigation and officers will continue to support them and their enquiries."
Ongoing enquiries
The IOPC investigation is underway, and police are supporting their enquiries. The road has since been cleared. The cyclist's family has not yet been identified publicly.
