A man and four children are fighting for their lives after a lorry exploded near a country pub in West Yorkshire. The explosion occurred outside the Hare and Hounds Inn in Mirfield yesterday afternoon, leaving all five victims with serious burns.
Emergency response and injuries
Emergency services were alerted at approximately 2:17 PM on Sunday following reports of a sudden explosion. Victims were trapped inside the vehicle. All five were transported to hospital, where the man and one child were found to have life-threatening injuries. The three other children suffered life-changing burns.
Footage from the scene shows the charred wreckage of a tipper truck, with the cab destroyed by flames and the front engine area gutted.
Police investigation
West Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation but believe there are no suspicious circumstances. A police spokesperson said: “Emergency services attended and found that five people in the vehicle, four children and a man, had suffered serious burns. All of them were taken to hospital for treatment. The man’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening, as are one of the children’s. The other children have injuries which are believed to be life-changing. Enquiries are ongoing into the incident, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”
Ambulance service details
A spokesperson for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service stated: “We received an emergency call at 2:11pm yesterday (Sunday) to report an explosion in a vehicle on Liley Lane in Mirfield. A number of ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene, including four ambulances and the air ambulance, and five patients were conveyed to hospital.”
