Donald Trump has asserted that King Charles shares his view that Iran should never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon. The claim came during the UK state visit to the United States, which has been marked by several unusual moments involving the US president.
State Visit Highlights
The visit began with a tense handshake on the White House steps, followed by a tour led by Trump and First Lady Melania. King Charles addressed the US Congress, hinting at strains in the US-UK relationship, before the state dinner where both leaders spoke.
Trump's Remarks on Iran
In his dinner speech, Trump highlighted the historic bond between the US and UK, referencing World War II and the Korean War, before turning to the conflict with Iran. He stated: 'We are doing a little bit of Middle East work right now, you might know. And we are doing very well. We have militarily defeated that particular opponent. And we're never going to let that opponent ever – Charles agrees with me, even more than I do – we're never going to let that opponent have a nuclear weapon. They know it, and they know that very powerfully.'
The audience applauded, and Trump continued: 'Our countries have stood together, defiant and triumphant against the forces of communism, fascism and tyranny.'
King's Reaction
Earlier, the King appeared startled when Trump mentioned that his mother 'had a crush' on Charles as a boy. The state visit is now halfway through; the royals will travel to New York and then to Bermuda over the weekend.
Iran's Nuclear Status
Iran has not been found to possess nuclear weapons, though it has faced accusations, particularly from the US. In 2015, Iran agreed to restrict its nuclear program, but the US withdrew from the deal, leading to alleged Iranian violations. In June 2025, Israel and the US bombed Iranian nuclear facilities. Scientists involved in the program have been targets of sabotage and assassinations. Iran uses nuclear power for domestic purposes and plans to build four new plants.
