Hundreds of police officers have executed raids on a religious community in Crewe, Cheshire, as part of a major investigation into allegations of sexual abuse, forced marriage, and modern slavery. Several individuals have been arrested in connection with the operation.
Raids on Religious Headquarters
The raids targeted the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, a group linked to a branch of Islam, which has its headquarters at Webb House, a former orphanage in Crewe. Approximately 150 people reside at the property. Two additional properties in the local area, linked to suspects, were also searched.
The operation was prompted by a woman who came forward in March 2026 with allegations of rape and sexual abuse she experienced while part of the Ahmadi religion in 2023. All alleged offences involve this single victim.
Police Statement on the Investigation
Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley of Cheshire Constabulary stated: 'Today’s operation is the outcome of a detailed and robust investigation into reports of serious sexual offences, forced marriage and modern slavery involving members of a religious group called Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Crewe. While those arrested are members of the group – I want to make clear that this is not an investigation into the religion, this is an investigation into the serious allegations which have been reported to us. We treat all reports of sexual assault seriously and are committed to doing all we can to achieve justice.'
He added: 'Following the arrests we are working closely with our partners to provide the appropriate advice and safeguarding to other members of the group. I would like to reassure residents that there is no risk to the wider community, and patrols have been stepped up to provide reassurance to local residents. I would urge anyone with any concerns to speak to an officer.'
Background of the Group
The Ahmadi religious group relocated to Cheshire from Sweden in 2021, purchasing Webb House as their base. Welfare centres have been established to safeguard 56 children, all of whom are home-schooled and part of the local Ahmadi community.
The investigation continues, with authorities working to ensure the safety of all individuals involved and to pursue justice for the victim.
