For one brief, shining moment, the internet was talking about Taylor Swift's wedding. The White House apparently couldn't let that stand. As Swift and Travis Kelce's lavish New York wedding celebrations got underway on Friday night, digital signs outside Madison Square Garden lit up with the message fans had been waiting to see: 'JUST T MARRIED.'
White House Intervenes
Roughly 10 minutes later, the official White House X account decided to join in. Instead of simply congratulating the newlyweds or carrying on with matters of state, the account shared an AI-edited version of the same image in which the wedding announcement had been replaced with the words: 'DONALD TRUMP IS YOUR PRESIDENT.' The caption read: 'IT'S HAPPENED!!'
Quite what, exactly, had 'happened' was unclear, given Donald Trump has been president for months. The post quickly sparked ridicule online, with critics wasting little time creating their own edited versions of the image. One viral reply replaced the message with: 'Trump is in the Epstein files!', before joking: 'Why would MSG do this??' Others questioned why the White House appeared so keen to insert itself into a celebrity wedding that had already become one of the biggest entertainment stories of the year.
Previous Attempts to Capitalize on Swift's Popularity
It wasn't the administration's first attempt to borrow a little Swift sparkle this week, either. Just a day earlier, the White House shared another social media post seemingly inspired by the singer's blockbuster Eras Tour, reimagining Trump as the star of his own political concert. While Swift's guests were arriving at Madison Square Garden, Trump himself was hundreds of miles away in South Dakota.
The president travelled to Mount Rushmore, where he has previously spoken about his desire to one day see his own face carved alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. It's hardly a new ambition.
Trump's Mount Rushmore Dream
During his first term, Trump reportedly told then-congresswoman Kristi Noem that joining the famous monument was his 'dream', while several allies have since floated legislation proposing exactly that. His appearance on Friday was briefly delayed by severe weather before he delivered a speech touching on everything from Iran to what he described as the 'communist menace' in America, while again lamenting that he has never received a Nobel Peace Prize.
Meanwhile, back in Manhattan, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were busy celebrating their wedding with what has become one of the most star-studded guest lists in recent memory, featuring celebrities from across music, film, and sport. For one evening at least, though, even the biggest celebrity wedding in years couldn't escape becoming part of America's political discourse.
