Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari Slams Trump's Iran War as 'Evil,' Demands Immediate Removal
In a scathing critique, Democratic Representative Yassamin Ansari has labeled President Donald Trump an "evil human being" and called for his removal from office over the escalating war in Iran. Speaking to the Guardian, Ansari, the sole Iranian American Democrat in Congress, accused Trump of being "mentally unstable" and warned that his actions pose a grave threat to global security.
Ansari's Background and Personal Connection to Iran
Ansari, 34, is the daughter of Iranian immigrants who fled the regime decades ago. Her father arrived in the US in the early 1970s on a student visa, while her mother escaped in 1981 amid the regime's crackdown on women's rights. She maintains that some of her extended family still reside in Iran, living in "a constant state of anxiety" due to the conflict.
Reflecting on the war, Ansari expressed disbelief at the current situation, stating, "I cannot believe we are in this moment. I cannot believe that this is happening in the United States." She emphasized that Trump's promises to end endless wars during his campaign have been betrayed, with military strikes launched on seven countries during his second term.
Condemnation of War Crimes and Regime Entrenchment
Ansari argued that the Trump administration has committed war crimes by deliberately targeting schools, bridges, and hospitals in Iran. She warned that these actions only strengthen the Iranian regime, which has exploited the destruction for propaganda purposes. "The regime in Iran is deeply entrenched," she observed, noting that the recent succession of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has tightened the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps's grip on power.
She highlighted the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Iran, predicting mass starvation and a food security crisis due to the bombing of civilian infrastructure. In a conversation with a 25-year-old doctor in northern Iran, Ansari learned that prices have doubled since the war began, exacerbating an already dire economic situation.
Calls for Political Action and Removal of Trump
Ansari has urged the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump, whom she deems unfit for office. She expressed frustration with Vice-President JD Vance's silence, given his history of campaigning against endless wars. Additionally, she plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for alleged violations of his oath and involvement in war crimes.
"I believe this is a five-alarm-fire moment like we have never before seen in our country's history," Ansari warned, calling for nationwide protests and days of action to stop the conflict. She emphasized that bombing Iran will not liberate its people, but rather worsen their plight under a repressive regime.
Broader Implications and Cultural Misunderstandings
Ansari, who speaks Farsi and wrote her college thesis on Iran's nuclear capacity, lamented that most Americans lack understanding of Iranian culture. She described Iran as a civilization with a rich history, vibrant traditions, and a hospitable population that has been repressed for 47 years. The war, she argued, only deepens hostilities and fails to address the root causes of the conflict.
As the US and Iran remain estranged since the 1979 hostage crisis, Ansari's outspoken stance highlights the growing domestic opposition to Trump's foreign policy. With Republicans blocking Democratic efforts to curb Trump's war powers, the political battle over Iran intensifies, setting the stage for further congressional clashes.
