Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax Commits Murder-Suicide Amid Divorce Proceedings
Justin Fairfax, the former lieutenant governor of Virginia whose political career was derailed by sexual assault allegations, shot and killed his wife Cerina Fairfax before taking his own life in a tragic domestic incident, according to police authorities. The murder-suicide occurred at the couple's residence in Annandale, Virginia, early Thursday morning, with their teenage children present in the home during the horrific event.
Police Detail Disturbing Circumstances of the Shooting
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis stated at a press conference that the shooting took place in the context of "an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding what seems to be a complicated or messy divorce." Police responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call from one of the Fairfaxes' teenage children shortly after midnight.
"Former lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife inside of their home and then shot and killed himself," Davis confirmed during the briefing.
The police chief revealed that Justin Fairfax had recently been served legal paperwork associated with upcoming court proceedings, which apparently triggered the violent incident. Both Fairfax and his wife were living together as they navigated their divorce process at the time of the shooting.
Political Career Marred by Controversy
Justin Fairfax, 47, served as Virginia's lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 under Governor Ralph Northam. As the second African American to hold statewide office in Virginia since Reconstruction, Fairfax was once considered a rising star in Virginia politics with significant potential for higher office.
His promising career trajectory was dramatically upended in 2019 when two women came forward with sexual assault allegations against him. The accusations sparked widespread calls for his resignation amid a broader misconduct scandal that engulfed Northam's administration. Despite maintaining his innocence, Fairfax's political standing never recovered from the controversy.
In 2021, Fairfax attempted a political comeback by seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nomination but finished a distant fourth place with just 3.54% of the vote, effectively ending his electoral prospects.
Previous Domestic Incident Investigation
Chief Davis disclosed that police had been called to the Fairfax residence once before in January of this year, when Justin Fairfax accused his wife of assault. After reviewing footage from security cameras Cerina Fairfax had installed inside the house, officers determined that no assault had actually occurred.
"The allegation that Mr. Fairfax made in January, that Mrs. Fairfax assaulted him, was proven to be untrue," Davis stated, highlighting the complex and troubled nature of the couple's relationship leading up to the fatal incident.
