Pete Hegseth Demands European Gratitude for Trump's Iran War
Fox News personality Pete Hegseth has launched a fiery defense of Donald Trump's military actions in Iran, insisting that Europe and other critics should be expressing gratitude rather than criticism. In remarks to reporters, Hegseth portrayed the conflict as a resounding success and a necessary measure against global threats.
Hegseth's Bold Claims Amid Economic Turmoil
Hegseth bragged about the progress of the Iran War, dismissing concerns over its duration and widespread impacts. "A regime like that refusing to abandon its nuclear ambitions is not just a regional problem, it's a direct threat to America, to freedom and to civilisation in the world, the Middle East, our ungrateful allies in Europe," he stated emphatically. He further argued that even segments of the American press should be saying one thing to President Trump: "Thank you."
These comments come as economic repercussions intensify. Gas prices have skyrocketed, with Brent crude oil spiking to $114 a barrel amid global fears of an energy crisis. Prices have surged more than 57% since the United States and Israel initiated the war with strikes on Iran on February 28.
Contrasting with Past Conflicts and Public Opinion
Despite the economic strain, Hegseth asserted that the Iran War would "not be like" the prolonged conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, which he attributed to "foolish politicians." He claimed, "The media here wants you to think, just 19 days into this conflict, that we're somehow spinning toward an endless abyss or quagmire. Nothing could be further from the truth."
However, Trump's war in Iran faces significant unpopularity, both in the United States and internationally, including in the UK. Recent revelations have added to the controversy, with reports that American soldiers were told the conflict is "God's plan" to bring about the end of the world.
Religious Overtones and Military Complaints
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation has received over 200 complaints from personnel across all branches of the armed forces regarding these religious assertions. One complainant detailed how their commander urged troops not to fear the looming threat of war, framing it as part of "God's divine plan" with references to the Book of Revelation, Armageddon, and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.
According to a copy of an email shared by journalist Jonathan Larsen, the commander stated with a "big grin on his face" that "President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth."
Hegseth's Ideological Background
Hegseth, often dubbed a "secretary of war" for his hawkish views, has long advocated for a Christian nationalist approach to leadership. He has previously praised the Crusades, historical campaigns where Christian warriors from western Europe ruthlessly seized control of Jerusalem from Muslim rule between the 11th and 13th centuries.
As global tensions and economic pressures mount, Hegseth's call for gratitude highlights the deep divisions and ideological underpinnings shaping the discourse around the Iran War, with critics pointing to its unpopularity and the unsettling religious rhetoric within military ranks.
