Teenager Admits to £140,000 Shoplifting Campaign Across London

A 17-year-old boy, described as "easily influenced," has pleaded guilty to stealing goods valued at over £137,000 from Boots stores in London, with his total shoplifting spree nearing £140,000. The teenager, who cannot be named due to his age, targeted multiple branches over a two-year period, leaving magistrates at Highbury Corner Youth Court stunned by the scale of his crimes.

Prolific Offending Across Four Boroughs

The boy's thefts spanned from April 2024 to December 2025, focusing on Boots locations in Westminster, Lambeth, Camden, and Kensington and Chelsea. In addition, he admitted to stealing from Holland and Barrett stores in Hammersmith and Fulham and Camden, bringing the total value of his campaign to nearly £140,000. His highest single theft involved goods worth £9,316.05 from a Boots in Kensington and Chelsea in October 2024.

Prosecutor Edward Kalber highlighted the significant impact on businesses, noting that the boy repeatedly targeted the same venues. Kalber argued for the case to be dealt with at crown court to allow for maximum sentencing flexibility, emphasizing the unique circumstances and high value of the stolen items.

"Shocked" by Potential Prison Sentence

During the court proceedings, the boy expressed shock at the possibility of imprisonment, a warning delivered by his grandfather. When asked about his motives, he stated, "Sometimes I just get distracted and led by other people, and stuff like that. I do not want to be like that anymore. I just want to be with my grandad." His mother supported this, claiming the family was unaware of his actions and describing him as easily influenced.

Chair of the magistrates' bench Jennifer Shewry acknowledged that the grandfather's warning had "shocked him," and the mother confirmed this. Shewry also noted that such cases are rare, requiring further information for sentencing.

Sentencing Adjourned with Strict Bail Conditions

Sentencing has been adjourned to May 7, with the teenager released on bail under strict conditions. He is prohibited from entering any Boots or Holland and Barrett store in England and Wales unless accompanied by a family member. Shewry warned him to "stay out of trouble," noting that any breach of conditions could lead to further court appearances and worsen his situation.

The boy pleaded guilty to 15 counts of theft, including 11 related to Boots, with an additional 45 offences taken into consideration. His identification was made through CCTV footage, which showed him stealing in the company of another youth, though no further details were provided about this individual.
